Paws || Walk On – 3.29 – 4.11

A glorious Happy Easter to everyone.  May your day be blessed and spent with those you love.

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.

Day 3 – Lemon Clove Sink Scrub – {DIY From Scratch}

I like to wake up to a clean kitchen.  I know that seems silly, but it makes me happy and gives me energy for the day. Which is why I work at making sure the dishes are done and the sink is empty at the end of the day.  I’m not always successful, but when I am, it makes for a great start to the day.

693006b55d5987fb384794fb7fcf5dbbI found this homemade nightly sink scrub at the Clean Mama blog.  It’s an incredibly simple recipe, but the results are amazing.

You put 2 cups of baking soda along with 10 drops each of lemon essential oil and clove essential oil.  Such an amazing combination of scents.  I use a fork to stir in the oils and then put the entire mix into a mason jar.

01f5108e5d8f880200d6672dfc76a652036f5ad75801b1a3ddc62a74881936b78505af8f847ce785ef84

I used my Crop-a-dile to punch the holes in the metal disc of the mason jar to turn the jar into a shaker.  Works beautifully.

01e4b7638f0dab2b9a99fe57f9eec8a9ad39e57de6I followed the directions and end up with an amazingly fresh clean sink.  I love the lemon/clove combo, but I think I might try a peppermint/lime combo as well.

You really should give this a try.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

Saturday Snippets | April 4, 2015

Welcome to Saturday Snippets.  This is where I share links and odd bits of info from the past week.

1.  Discovered a new blog.  Make do and mend-able.  This is a gal after my own heart.

2. If you’re a Star Wars enthusiast, you’ll love this.  A Millennium Falcon made out of 99% paper.  Took 4 years to make.

3.  These young ladies have a lot to teach us about perseverance.

4.  Have you ever wanted to something for a 100 days straight?  The 100 Day Project starts April 6th.

5. This would be a cool shirt to get.

Well that’s all the snippets I have for today.  Have a wonderful Saturday,

Grace

Day 2 – Homemade Shampoo and Conditioner – {DIY From Scratch}

In my journey this month to find recipes that will help me save money and reduce the amount of chemicals I come in contact with, I’ve decided to try homemade shampoo and conditioner.

01ecdab86cfee65933e53f2038114e842a161da386A little background.  I’m not terribly fussy with my hair.  I make sure to get a good haircut every 5-6 weeks (I’ve been going to the same gal for 32 years) and I’ve been blessed with naturally curly hair, not too dry or too oily.  That being said, I don’t like to spend a lot of time in the morning (and by a lot of time, I mean 20 minutes) getting ready so I use a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner and that’s it.  I blow dry my hair and I’m good to go.  I obviously won’t be doing any commercials for Pantene anytime soon, but I’m very content with my hair.

homemade-shampoo2Today I decided to try a homemade shampoo and conditioner, specifically the one I found at One Good Thing by Jillee.  A baking soda shampoo and apple cider vinegar conditioner.

I mixed the water and baking soda and put them into a spray bottle as well as mixed the water and apple cider vinegar and put it into a second spray bottle.  A few blogs I read mentioned being careful to make sure the baking soda was completely rinsed out of your hair before you added the vinegar because when the two are combined it has a ‘volcano’ effect.  I made sure to rinse well.

Going into this experiment, I had a couple of concerns:  1.  could I live without bubbles and 2. would I smell like a salad.  So far my life has not come to an end with the absence of bubbles and no salad smell.  I was surprised how clean my hair felt and how much softer and curlier it was.  I’m going to try this for the whole 30 days and see how I feel then.

Have you ever tried homemade shampoo and/or conditioner?  I would love to hear your experiences.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

I’m wondering if you’re going to make shampoo for us.  Mostly I’m wondering if there’s a bath in my future.

Day 1 – Garbage Disposal Fizzies – {DIY From Scratch}

I walk my dogs on pretty much the same route everyday.  You get the know the area pretty well, well enough to notice changes.  Lately the flowers have been blooming, blossoms have been covering the trees and with that come that amazing scents of the season. My favorite by far is orange blossom.  There’s a house we pass every day where you’re just assaulted by the sweet smell; I can’t get enough of it.  Needless to say the dogs are smelling other stuff that is equally as aromatic to them, but not so much to me.

A couple of years ago I made a batch of soap using Orange Blossom fragrance oil and next to the Spiced Mahogany fragrance oil, it’s my favorite.  I need to make a batch of soap soon and will probably use the Orange Blossom oil.

01f8c29b755df26335a26b37b1fbb4e43791c68596Today’s {DIY From Scratch} is Garbage Disposal Fizzies using a recipe found at Create Craft Love.  I’ve used cut up lemons before to freshen my garbage disposal but it never occurred to me to make tablets.

016dc3de19e0a338207ebee9950a88d5e3956e6bf3I followed the recipe to the letter with the exception of substituting orange blossom essential oil for the lemon essential oil.  I’ll probably make another batch using lemon and maybe even lime.  I mixed the baking soda and salt and then poured in the liquid dish soap.  I recommend using a fork to mix the soap into the powder.  The tines of the fork help the ingredients to break up easier while the spoon just kept the soap in a blob.  And I added 5 more drops of the orange blossom oil than the recommended 10 drops of lemon.  I don’t think it really makes a difference to therecipe and the scent is that much richer.

01ccdfca0b452d637bdbf857bf0f03b0c0c0618487I scooped these cute little bundles of orange goodness onto my parchment clad cookie sheet and set them to dry overnight.  Can’t wait to try them in the morning.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

April blog series {DIY From Scratch}

I’m starting a blog series on April 2nd called {DIY From Scratch}.

I decided to start April 2nd because Mike’s birthday is April 1st and we’ll be celebrating.  I also thought I would give myself a 24 hour break in between monthly series.

I’ve made my own laundry detergent (the gooey, gloopy kind), all purpose cleaner and soap in the past and love the idea that I know (and can pronounce) all the ingredients in these items. I plan to try to make all our home cleaning solutions as well as look into solutions for the garden.

All the posts in this series will involve making home and gardening solutions, beauty concoctions and DIY projects from scratch.  I’m interested in seeing if these will 1) save me money and 2) actually work.  I’ll be doing a summary post at the end of the month to report on the effectiveness of my attempts.

See you tomorrow,

Grace

Day 31 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – DIY Dishtowels

Day 31 of Make Madness – DIY Dishtowels

01539c33cdf723c9713b23806447681db032ee7b17014fead364e4ce28e106e73e2e705823b023ee51a1I started by cutting the summer dress into the largest pieces of fabric possible and kept the hem intact.  This gave me only three sides to hem.

I used an old dishcloth as my pattern and cut out several “new” dishcloths.  The fabric is a nice heavyweight cotton which will do well for kitchen chores.  I hemmed the three remaining sides and was done in no time at all.  The whole project went faster than I thought it would.

013ff7610e5146ba08caf8db8e65ac886813045fc801f906f0ff374690e594f83ff06b4433cd709c1b9101e6279a19e6e5862ab509f7c4eace6beafcf20e7cI love being able to get the most use of things and this is one of the projects that feels very satisfying.

Well this is the end of the {Make Madness} series. It’s been so much fun trying new activities and working on projects that I’ve been literally wanting to do for years.  Thank you for joining me on this little venture.  I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Day 31 of Make Madness – DIY Dishtowels

87b5f4883e8951b044d53b69362413ebI’ve been on a Spring Cleaning kick at the moment and noticed, while decluttering my kitchen, that our dishtowels are SUPER old.  They work great, but they’ve seen better days.

Not wanting to spend any money on dishtowels (there are other fun things I’d prefer to spend my money on), I started to think how I could make myself a set of “new” dishtowels.

I thought about knitting or crocheting them out of cotton yarn, but I’ve got a gazillon yarn projects going at the moment.  Then I thought about sewing a set using the yards and yards of fabric in my garage.  Finally it hit me as I was decluttering my clothes closet.  I have several summer dresses that fit, but are a bit boxy and outdated and the cotton material is perfect for this project.

Using this tutorial, let the upcycling begin!!

Until this evening,

Grace

Day 30 of Make Madness – Organizing Embroidery Floss

018680e8183c58d2bc5da1e4f8a8e6abf84f0c5d8dI am so in love with this way of organizing and storing my embroidery floss.

First, it’s so neat and tidy and second, you end up with a beautiful bowl full of color.

I’m nowhere near finished, but it was incredibly therapeutic to just sit and watch Youtube videos while I wrapped thread.

017aa1b020a93eb392c46901edb18605f0a7934bc6I wrote the DMC # on each clothes pin on the off chance that I work on a pattern some day and need to know the color by number.

Now I just need to find the perfect jar (big jar) to display these little gems.

01d96f8ac1f322d0f3093833aa770d740da5b468dbI can’t believe there’s only one day left in {Make Madness}. Thank you so much for joining me this month.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

That is a bowl of goodness and happiness. But it’s not edible.  How about a bowl of kibble – which is goodness and happiness to us?

Day 30 of Make Madness – Organizing Embroidery Floss

a77e0230e7a10cf207558496bf0fa414When we were married about a year, Mike bought me all the colors of DMC embroidery floss for my birthday.  I cross stitched back then and embroidery floss was my ‘paint’.  It was an incredibly sweet gift, especially because he’s not a fan of craft stores.

I used a lot of the floss, but still have a bunch left, lo these many years later.  I came across this pin on Pinterest and thought this was a great way to display the many colors of floss.

Today I use the floss with my cards and other crafts and this will make it easier to pick colors.

Come back tonight to see how I did.

Until this evening,

Grace
