Day 25 of Make Madness – Recycled Mint Tins

IMG_25561-550x36601e21d6d6ba4bdf91e9623a6e788c67edf04322a26For this tutorial I decided to paint my Altoid tins black mostly because I didn’t have any white flat paint.  I grabbed a few rolls of washi tape and taped away.

As I was working on my tins, I thought about a few other ideas for decorating these boxes involving scrapbook paper, my doodle art, photographs and alcohol inks.  I have 6 more tins left, so I’m going to give those other ideas a try in the next few days.

I haven’t filled these guys yet because I still need to add a coat of Mod Podge to seal the tape, but I’m definitely going to build myself a sewing kit, a hexie kit, knitting stitch markers holder and a watercolor kit.  And I’m going to heed Mindy’s suggestion and use one for dog treats.  The tins are a perfect size for my pocket when I’m walking the dogs.  Now I won’t have to contend with treat crumbs in my pockets.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

Day 25 {Make Madness} – Recycled Mint Tins

Make Madness

Day 25 of Make Madness – Recycled Mint Tins

IMG_25561-550x366In life before diabetes, I would always carry a tin of Altoids in my purse, but now I use a sugar-free variety of mint.  We would buy Altoids in bulk at Costco and keep tins in our cars as well as in my purse.  They were our favorite mint.

When we finished the mints, I’ll bet you can guess what I did with the tins.  I kept them.

And today I’m going to follow this tutorial so I can pretty them up and use them for a variety of uses.  A few projects I have in mind are a sewing kit, a hexie kit, knitting stitch markers holder and a watercolor kit.

Until this evening,

Grace

Day 24 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – Scrap Paper Storage

Make Madness

Day 24 of Make Madness – Scrap Paper Storage

SUcardstock_2011sep28fI’d like to say my scrap paper storage looks like this one, but I’ve only begun to set things up.

019aa27f3e88372b7c09a604e3ec97e70a6ebe7dbcI pulled my index file drawer out of storage, the one I found at a garage sale, found my scrap paper bins  and started to make my dividers.

I used my die cutter to make index tags out of the paper scraps using Tim Holtz Alterations index tag die.  I then printed out the color’s name using my label maker.  It may seem redundant to have an index tag in the color of the scrap and the name, but when I’m filing, I sometimes focus on the name and other times the color.  It also makes it seem more organized.

01cd3e9fbd37fd075a7e149cbe75ce7600aaebf41301d4c8a3fc14648a29c83e4ad46e07ccd01bba0f68015e7145c8c9bc536391380f5d8c05bb66c061dcaf

I attached the tags to 3″X5″ cards and popped them in the index card file.  I think I’ll need to store the bits of paper in envelopes because they really are tiny, but I can make envelopes that are small enough to fit in the 3″X5″ space.

0102bd1352cb836dfdab1f8150766bb3489f5453b301efb803129d24f9a19d3429205b1d6f8d8f199348

I think this is going to work out beautifully.

Until tomorrow,

Quest46 – Update #4

It’s been exactly four months since my Quest46 started.  {If you’re new to my blog, Quest46 is a group of 46 goals I gave myself for the next 365 days (or 273 as of today).  You can read about it here.}

Observations after four months:

  • I really need to review my Quest46 items on a weekly basis.  There are a few that I’ve already forgotten that I want to do. Yikes!
  • Still learning to go easy on myself when I miss a self-imposed goal.  Hey life throws you curve balls and I have to keep everything in perspective.
  • Being aware of these commitments I’ve made is making me mindful of projects that will present themselves in the future.  I’ve decided to just go with the flow.  Opportunities come into our lives for reasons.  And crafting opportunities are glittery gifts from angels.  You just can’t say no. 😉
  • I was concerned that my March blog series would set me back, but it’s actually catapulted me ahead with one of the Quest46 items.  So not really a problem after all.

I’ve written the entire list along with current progress.

1. Memorize Psalm 91.  Continuing to memorize.  I have the first eight verses under my belt.  I wish I could say this is getting easier, but I’m terrible at memorization.  I’m still amazed at how God uses each recitation to reveal more about who He is.
2. Lose the rest of my weight and increase my fitness.  I’ve stalled in my weight loss, but still exercising and varying it by adding strength training and stretching seems to be helping.
3. Find and implement new ways to honor Mike daily.  I’m still working on keeping our place tidy although I’ve had a few projects out during the past month.  I’m working on finding places for these so they don’t clutter our space.  Mike never complains, but it’s important to me that he feels relaxed when he gets home from work.
4. Make albums for each dog.   Have the albums, continuing to sort through pictures.  There are quite a few as you can imagine.  Trying to decide how I want the albums to flow.
5. Crochet a Ripple Blanket.  I’m making really good progress which helps because I need to be finished by May 15th.  It’s a gift.
6. Plant a vegetable garden.  Spring is here and I don’t have any planters.  I’m working on finishing our pavers, but need to start preparing my planters.
7. Journal 52.  I am several weeks behind.  Need to catch up.
8. Read 24 new books.  Have chosen 21 of the 24.  Here’s the 22:  The God Ask (done), Manage Your Day to Day (done), Handmade Market Place, Lore of Running, Outlander #1, The Pilgrim’s Progress, Yarn to Go, Jock of the Bushveld, Dear Mr. Knightly, How to be the Leader of the Pack, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals, Lady Susan, The Scent of Water: Grace for Every Kind of Broken, White Fang, Unbroken (done), Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, Platform, The Go-Getter, The Artist’s Way, Yes Please (done), Scary Close (done)
9. Make a scarf for Margaret.  Here’s the pattern, started a month ago with the intention of sending it to her for her birthday in January, but discovered a major mistake and ripped out 30 rows.  I’m not entirely sure when it will be done, but it will be before November 24, 2015.
10. Make birthday cards for family and friends.  Finished November, December and January, February, March and April.  Working on May and June.
11. Send two “thinking of you gifts” every month.  Gift #1 done, Gift #2 done, Gifts #3-11 done.
12. Complete 6 online classes.  Still need to do this.  First one scheduled for April 1, 2015.
13. Start a 5 year – daily, one-line journal.  Started, love it, still doing it.
14. Learn how to make paper.  Probably during the summer.
15. Make Christmas stockings.  This is one of those Christmas one’s that will be for next year.  Don’t worry, the doggies will still get plenty of treats ;-).
16. Learn 12 new recipes.  #1 complete.  Pumpkin Pie (low carb)  #2 complete.  Creme Brulee (low carb)
17. Learn how to weave.  I learned very basic weaving this month and loved it.
18. Record 12 card making video tutorials.  Start this in the new year.  Dabbling with the idea of making this a series.  Just dabbling.
19. Make a smaller soap box and make different scented soaps every month.  Soap can be temperamental in colder climates.  I’m waiting for the days to warm up a bit.  Mike had to resort to store bought.  Uhhggg!
20. Paint Kitchen Cabinets.  Looking to do this in June, 2015.
21. Learn how to dye with natural ingredients.  Waiting for springtime.
22. Work 52 items off “My Todo’s” Board on Pinterest. Completed 6, but need to step up my game. #1 I made paper beads using old books, bead cores and Utee Ultra Thick Embossing Resin.  #2   I made dog collars for a friend’s dog.  #3  Homemade Soft Scrub Cleaner #4  Made Valentine heart wreath with dyed coffee filters.  #5   Made homemade mosquito repellent.  Smelled good, but didn’t work.  #6   Made dog chew toys.  These were super popular.  In my {Make Madness} blog series, I will have checked off 31 items by the end of March.  That brings my total to 37.
23. Make mini-albums of dogs for Christmas presents.  I’ve changed my mind again.  I’m back to the mini-album idea and doing it for next year.
24. Make Mike a Dr. Who Quilt.  Have cut the panels and downloaded the patterns.  Next up, embroidery!
25. Start a fairy garden.  Going to wait for spring.  Started a Pinterest board to curate ideas.
26. Paint patio furniture.  Scheduled for July, 2015.
019673100d9134c99464e5e0c6d8a7e7fc378f1edb27. Plant a cutting garden.  Spring, 2015.  Did get a head start on planting a flower with my amaryllis.
28. Make dog biscuit gift bags for Christmas.  This was going to be a Valentine gift, but that didn’t happen.  I’m switching back to Christmas 2015 because I found some cute containers when I was organizing my craft room. Still don’t think the dogs will mind.
29. Complete all the achievements of the 7 Minute Workout.  Started this and loving it.
30. Beat my time in the Urban Cow Half Marathon.  Increased my walking mileage, but going to wait to start running.  Feeling much better after I got my medicines sorted out.  Going to continue to increase my walking mileage for another couple of months before I attempt running.
31. Finish Central Park Hoodie.  Found the project, but I’m waiting until I’m done with Margaret’s scarf and the Ripple Blanket to start this.
32. Read through the Bible. 1 chapter per day.  Started this on January 1, 2015. Up to Exodus 33.
33. Make birds for wall tree.  The first birds will appear on the Valentine’s tree.  Post to come.  The birds didn’t appear.  I’m thinking they’ll be here for Easter.
34. Declutter and decorate Master Bedroom.  Started decluttering using the method found in the book “The life-changing magic of tidying up” by Marie Kondo.
35. Make Cloth Art Journal.  Scheduled for the summer.
36. Learn to knit socks.  Found the pattern and the class.  Will wait until Central Park Hoodie is finished (31).
37. Work on Project Life every week.  Trying to carve out Sunday afternoons for this and not being very successful.  I’m already a month behind, but I’ve been keeping track of journaling throughout the week.
38. Transcribe Da’s tapes.  Started listening to them, but need to carve out focused time to take notes.  In the meantime, my mom wanted them transferred to cd’s and she’s been listening to them and taking notes.  Hhmmmm…
39. Make dog beds. Came up with a better plan for my Etsy shop.  They’re now a ‘Made To Order’ item so now I’m prepping the material, but waiting for the order before I make the beds.  This new system is saving me time and potentially supplies.
40. Pray for my nieces and nephews.  Everyday.  I’m really enjoying this.
41. Add a new item every month to Etsy shop to build variety and inventory.  I haven’t added a new item every month, but I’m adding hand crafted cards to my inventory.
42. Put together a team for the local SPCA Doggie Dash in June.  Will begin in April, 2015.
43. Photo-a-day using the Collect App.  Love this app.  Here’s December, 2014, January and February 2015.

February 2015

44. Read Pride and Prejudice.  Will begin this in the new year.
45. Knit 1 square per week for Knit-a-square. I have 8 finished.  Should have 16 finished.  Got some knittin’ to do.
46. Be a better blogger and blog-reader. Post consistently. Comment regularly.  Work on this everyday.  Really pleased with my {31 Days of Cards} Series and my {Make Madness} Series.

Until next time,
Grace

Day 24 {Make Madness} – Scrap Paper Storage

Day 24 of Make Madness – Scrap Paper Storage

As I’ve mentioned a few times, I don’t like to waste anything.  If I think I can eek out another something out of a supply, I’ll hang onto it.  Doesn’t matter what it is.

Recently I tackled the task of organizing all my scrap paper from card making and scrapbooking.  I took 8 see-through bins and organized my scraps by color.  Admittedly there are large pieces of paper in these bins, but the bulk of the bits are less than 2-3″.  Some of these bits I punch into tiny shapes and keep for embellishing projects, but the bigger tiny bits I keep for accent pieces.

SUcardstock_2011sep28fI came across this post at Paper Pursuits and decided to organize my tiny scrap bits using a index file drawer.  I found mine at a garage sale awhile back and haven’t found a use for it until now.

Until this evening,

Grace

Day 23 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – Making T-Shirt Yarn

Day 23 of Make Madness – Making T-Shirt Yarn

Well today was one of those days that didn’t quite go the way I thought it would.

About mid-morning I went downstairs into our garage to retrieve my bin of t-shirts to begin today’s craft only to discover water all over the garage floor.  The source of the problem:  a busted water heater.  I quickly called Mike, who told me how to turn off the heat and the water, and let me know he was on his way home.  Long story short, we have a new hot water heater that will be installed tomorrow and we’re drying out the area that got wet.

TShirtYarnTutorial-700x654

0146cd9277553e27300a3a0be09f59abcaf86b9b66

Sooooo… I didn’t start my project until late.  I managed to find a t-shirt to cut up and followed this tutorial.  The instructions were great and before I knew it I had a ball of t-shirt yarn.

I wanted to cut more shirts up but I ran out of time.  I’ll definitely be converting those babies into yarn and use them to make floor rugs.

0104238db7f65ace038e1959abdf4af59930d116daI grabbed my humongous crochet hook (size Q, I think) and started my rug.  I crocheted a beginning chain row the width I wanted for the rug, and then made single crochet stitches starting in the 2nd chain from the hook.  When I reached the end of the row, I turned around, chained 1 and continued back with single crochets.  I was able to do 3 complete rows with the ball of yarn I made.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

I was watching you make the t-shirt yarn, mom, and I would be willing to help.  I could take one end in my mouth and pull.  I’d be good at that.

Day 23 of Make Madness – Making T-Shirt Yarn

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you’ll know at least two things about me:  1.  I love dogs and 2.  I don’t like to waste anything.

So it should come as no surprise to you that I don’t throw out our t-shirts when they’ve seen better days or we’ve outgrown them.  I save them and I have a few ;-).

127789708146375066_nSkwDwht_f_thumb TShirtYarnTutorial-700x654Today I’m going to make t-shirt yarn using this tutorial for the purpose of crocheting a floor rug.  Let’s see how it goes.

Day 22 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – Carving Stamps

Day 22 of Make Madness – Carving Stamps

012e7dec85d342c758500275258820517187d6ed75 I first have to say that this book, Carve Stamp Play is excellent.  Julie does a wonderful job of describing all aspects of stamp carving from wh0179ce233d2a231df538424fa781239066df71aa88at materials to purchase, how to assemble the tools and how to stamp.

She describes a variety of methods to transfer your image as well as provides you with images to try.  The book is full of tutorials ranging from beginner to more complex only in terms of the image.  Carving the stamps requires patience and time, but is relatively easy.

013b83e2b10d6cd20c2054856fa0a6b804d13b3f89015faf2746249875a45c96cdce19110d021e98d5abI started by carving a heart shape.  Julie does a fantastic job of describing how to use the lino cutter and if you follow her directions, you’ll end up with a good looking stamp.  I kept my stamp designs simple, but I definitely see myself doing more of this.  I’m very interested in carving an alphabet to use with my art journals and Project Life album.

01dd62e88ae6554441eb25ed42cd4f018a4c9470eb016fc75340fa62b0513dfacc12eae582f71fa1e900Predictably I carved a dog paw and, a little less predictably, I carved a lowercase “g”.  I learned a valuable lesson while carving the letter “g”.  All stamps are a mirror-image meaning that the carved image is a mirror image of the stamped image.  When I drew the “g”, I drew it as I would stamp it except that was wrong.  Luckily, I was still able to use the stamp by applying ink to the reverse side.  I’ll definitely have to keep an eye on that in the future.

014bcceb37391df90867116a5c6dfcb877c60fb63a01bb0aa1f3815ad7f30ef2b3e306df5086354ffb81In Julie’s book, she turns many of her doodle illustrations into stamps.  I have a long way to go before I’m able to carve something that intricate, but it’s a great way to turn some of my doodles into stamps.  Looks like I’m going to keep carving!

Until tomorrow,

Grace

Paws || Walk On – 3.15 – 3.28

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.

My favorite quote from the week:  “Worry is a waste.  It holds no ability to impact outcomes or change circumstances.  Instead, it ruthlessly steals any remaining joy and energy from the gift of today.  So REFUSE it.  Leave no room for it.  Let worry go, and peace will come to rest instead.”  Michele Cushatt, Author.

Have a wonderful week,
Grace
