Pinterest365 – Day 57 & 58 – Fabric Softener and Dryer Sheets

I’ve been doing a LOT of laundry this week washing blankets and comforters that I use in the bottom of our dog crates.  Blankets and comforters are quite bulky so I can only do a couple per load.  This adds up to a lot of time spent with the washer and dryer going as well as using a fair bit of detergent and dryer sheets.  A few months ago I started making my own laundry detergent, but still had a jumbo box of Bounce dryer sheets.  Yesterday I ran out of those and started my search for DIY dryer sheets.

Most of the DIY dryer sheet posts involved soaking bits of fabric (flannel, old towels, old t-shirts) in fabric softener.  I don’t use fabric softener, so I also needed to find a recipe for DIY fabric softener.  I found one where I had all the ingredients and combined a couple of Pinterest posts.

fabric-softenerIMG_0671To make the fabric softener, I used a recipe from Thrifty, Crafty, Frugal.  I boiled 2 cups of water, combined that with 1 cup of white vinegar and added 2/3 cup of hair conditioner.  I don’t use conditioner regularly, but had a whole bottle under the sink in my bathroom.  It felt good to be finally using it for something.  I mixed these 3 IMG_0670ingredients in a mason jar, stirred until the conditioner was blended and then waited for the liquid to cool.

dryer sheetsFor my DIY dryer sheets, I found a post at Homemade Mamas.  I found an old t-shirt of Mike’s, cut it up with my pinking shears and fished a yogurt container out of the recycle bin.  I stuffed the yogurt container full of the 3″X5″ pieces of t-shirt and then filled the container with the cooled fabric softener.  The recipe said to let it sit for a couple of days, but I couldn’t wait, and ran a load IMG_0673IMG_0672this morning and it worked great.

I love how the sheets can just be put back in the yogurt container and soaked until the next time they’re needed.  I suppose over time, the fabric softener will get used up, but I think it’s going to be a very long while.  This project meets all my frugal, DIY, green requirements, was super easy to do.

I also whipped up a batch of laundry detergent.  If you’re doing the math, the last batch lasted me 84 days (almost 3 months) and that included giving away 4 quarts at Christmas.  Originally I had calculated that it would last twice as long (at least I would be doing half as many loads of laundry).  Apparently I do more laundry that I thought.  I don’t have any plans to give away any more (but will if the need arises), so this batch should last longer.  I still love the simple ingredients, the fresh smell and you can’t beat the price.

Here’s to fluffing and folding,  Grace

Can I have a Do-over?

Ever feel like you just want to start over?

IMG_0651When it comes to my Project Life album, I want to start over.  I bought the core kit and the album for my birthday in November, 2011 (yes, 2011) and was gung ho to faithfully document my life through this incredible tool.  Well, I made it through February, 2012.  Boo!  And the fault is all mine.  In retrospect there were several factors that threatened to trip me up, but the biggest one is ME!

Here are the elements I think contributed to missing 10 months of documented life:

1.  I tried to put too much information into each week.  I tried to gather every tiny detail of life, instead of reflecting on the week and picking out the memories that were the most impactful.

2.  I tried to get too fancy.  I follow a lot of scrapbooking bloggers that do incredibly beautiful work and also do Project Life. (Ali Edwards, Elise Blaha Cripe, to name a couple).  I tried to emulate their style (because they’re amazing) instead of find my own style and frustrated myself because I am not them.

3.  I didn’t carve out time every week to work on this.  It doesn’t take much time, but when that time isn’t allocated it’s easy to let other stuff get in the way.

4.  I didn’t put good systems in place for picture printing and documenting.

Yesterday, I was listening to the Paperclipping.com podcast and their guests were Becky Higgins and two of her creative design team members.  Becky is the creator of Project Life and here is what she shared, “Yesterday I was on the Paperclipping Roundtable and the entire show is about Project Life. Elise Blaha Cripe and Catherine Davis, both brand-new to our Creative Team this year, also joined the discussion and we had a lot of great discussion about different approaches to using Project Life, as well as the benefits of keeping it really simple. If you’re interested in listening, it’s right HERE. I even talk about how I documented life on a weekly basis last year … until June. And then life took on some unexpected twists, and the whole last half of my 2012 book is still unfinished. However, as you listen you’ll gain insight as to WHY I’m not stressed, and HOW I am planning to easily and quickly wrap up the remaining 6 months of my 2012 book.”

IMG_0644 IMG_0646 IMG_0647 IMG_0648 I cannot tell you how much her words instantly relieved me of the guilt I’ve been feeling at just completing two months of last year!  While I won’t be going back to fill in the rest of 2012, I promptly got my album out, collected my core kit cards and a few stickers and started fresh with 2013.  I had been jotting down daily memories and collecting them in my Iphone, so it was easy to write the stories and pop in the pictures.

I’m still trying to figure out the picture printing deal.  The CVS that I use has a policy that you have to order $5 worth of photo printing or else they charge you a $1.50 surcharge.  If I only need 7 pictures during a week (about $1.40), it’s not very cost effective to print every week.  I haven’t figured out how the cost compares to printing on my printer yet, so until I do, I will be collecting my pictures until I have at least $5 worth to print.  In the meantime, my solution is to identify which picture I want in which section of my page and then just put a sticky note.  Then when the photos are printed, I can just slip them in.

I am more dedicated to recording my stories and taking my pictures to ensure that I am documenting my life.  I am completely comfortable with maybe going back later to fancy them up with embellishments, but if I don’t do that then it’s okay.  I have the most important pieces in place.  I think I’ve addressed all four of the areas that I saw as stumbling blocks and am excited about the whole process again.

I love do-overs!  Grace

Being a Follow Thru-er

Or more accurately, don’t be an over-committer.  I have been challenged recently with the idea that I might not be someone who is the best at following through.  Now nobody has said anything to me; I have just been noticing a trend in my life that points to the unsightly fact that I have trouble following through.  Then I took a serious look at my circumstances and realized it’s not that I don’t follow through, it’s that I over-commit.

Ideas are flying into my head at warp speed most days and I want to do them all.  That’s not the problem.  The dilemma begins when I open my big mouth and start telling people that I’m going to be doing such and such.  Then I have placed myself in a situation where I need to follow-thru.  Now one of two things happens at this point.  1.  I do follow-thru on everything and manage to thoroughly exhaust myself in the process or 2.  I don’t follow-thru, look like a flake and disappoint people.  Neither scenarios are optimal.  Now I’m fairly certain I’m not the only person who does this, but I am interested in a solution.

As I’ve been taking a hard look at this, I’ve decided on this plan of action.  The ideas are still going to come at warp speed.  I’m going to write them down and not do anything about them.  Once a month I will review my list and decide if there are any that can be acted on within the scope of all my other commitments.  I don’t want to stop the idea process, I just want to be able to have a vehicle to collect them so I don’t push them all through to the execution phase.  I think this will help.

Not adding anything new will keep me focused on my current commitments and keep me plugging away at them.

Over the past couple of days, I read a couple of blog posts that really challenged and encouraged me and I wanted to share them with you.

Katy from the Non-Consumer Advocate wrote about Frugality vs. Simple Living.  A line in her post that jumped off the screen at me was, “I believe frugality and simple living all boil down to choosing a deliberate life.”  I love the idea of choosing and living a deliberate life.  In some ways I think that’s what I’m trying to achieve with all my projects, I’m just fumbling a bit as I start. I’m not trying to make excuses, but I’ve been made aware of how much of life just passes me by because I’m not paying attention and I don’t want to do that anymore.  Change is always messy at first and I think what I’ve been experiencing is change.  Read Katy’s post.  It’s really good.

The other post that challenged me was from Trent at the Simple Dollar.  He wrote about turning external motivation into internal motivation.  Boy that struck a chord.  The sentence that leapt off the screen:  I have never been authentically successful when external forces have pushed me.  Every bit of lasting success in my life has come from internal motivation.”  He does a really good job of asking authentic questions and describing the path he took.  Another post that would be worth your time.

How do you deal with the challenge of over-commitment or lack of follow-thru?

Until next time,Grace

10things {} Yummy Yarn

One of the blogs I follow is www.shimelle.com.  Shimelle Laine is a blogger, scrapbooker, glitter gal, resident of London and all around amazing talent.  I found out about her through a podcast I listen to, “The Paperclipping Roundtable”.  Every month, she blogs ten things on the tenth.  And she encourages other bloggers to join in.  Your ten things can be absolutely anything you feel like sharing!

Last month I shared my collection of Santas and this month I’m going to share 10 selections of yarn that I use regularly and love.  I have been organizing all my knitting and crochet projects by printing out patterns, picking out the needles and deciding on my yarn choices.  Like a true creature of habit, I gravitate to certain brands pretty regularly, but all in all there isn’t a skein of yarn I don’t like.  Okay if it’s scratchy I tend to stay away, but other than that, I love them all.

I have a few projects in the works this year and hopefully I’ll be able to finish them all.

Vannas Choice#1.  Vanna’s Choice is a wonderfully soft acrylic yarn in a wide range of colors.  I’ve made baby blankets, hats and 8″ squares for a charity with this yarn.  It’s very affordable and when it’s on sale, it’s really hard not to “stock up” even though I could probably stock the store with my stash :-).
Simply Soft

#2.  Simply Soft by Caron is just that – simply soft.  It also has a wonderful sheen that gives the resulting project a shimmery quality.  I’ve made many scarves with this yarn and also appreciate its affordability.  There are so many beautiful shades to pick from, it’s really quite difficult.  I’m finishing my first hat with this yarn and am interested to see how it turns out.

Homespun# 3.  Lion Brand Homespun is the best yarn for blankets.  It is so cozy soft and does a really nice job of keeping its shape.  A few years ago I made several prayer shawls with Homespun and the variegated colors always kept me guessing about how the shawls would look when finished.  They never disappointed.

Cotton#4.  Sugar ‘n Cream Cotton by Lily.  This is the only cotton I use.  The range of colors and quality of the yarn keeps me coming back.  I’ve knit and crocheted many, many dish cloths for gifts and for home use.  They have held up beautifully for years and are a great alternative to kitchen sponges and paper towels.

Wool of the Andes#5.  Wool of the Andes from Knitpicks.  100% Peruvian Highland Wool.  Just the sound of those words together makes me giddy.  This is an incredibly soft wool despite the fact that it’s wool.  And the color palette is out of this world.  You would think this would cost a small fortune, but it’s very affordable.  I have plans for a large couch afghan with this wool.

ITATASOLID#6.  Araucania.  All the way from Chile, this yarn is a luxurious blend of wool, silk and bamboo.  I have several skeins and have shawl patterns all lined up to knit these beauties.  It’s a great fingering weight yarn and while it needs to be purchased at a specialty yarn store, it’s very reasonably priced.  It comes in solids and variegated skeins that leave you breathless.

Fisherman's Wool#7.  Fisherman’s Wool from Lion Brand is the wool I use when I want to dye yarn.  I experimented with Kool Aid dyeing a while back and was very pleased with how this yarn held onto the color.  The wool is made of undyed pure virgin wool with natural lanolin oil. It is soft, warm, naturally water-resistant and at 465 yards per skein it’s very cost-effective.  I have knit several hats with this yarn and want to complete some squares with it.

garden_skein#8.  Deborah Norville’s Serenity Garden yarn is 100% microfiber.  I’m not sure what that means, but I know I really like this yarn.  I use it exclusively with my Sockee Poos (Dog Poop Bag Holder).  The color variegation means that no two Sockee Poos are alike.

Fun Fur#9.  Fun Fur by Lion Brand is a novelty ‘eyelash’ yarn.  Despite its delicate look, it’s really quite sturdy.  I use it to make my CattyWampus catnip toys.  The cats love the fuzzy feel and the catnip doesn’t hurt either.

220Skein#10.  And finally Cascade 200.  This is also a 100% Peruvian Highland Wool that comes in solids and tweeds.  It is luxurious and great for projects where you need a quality wool, but don’t want to spend a small fortune.  Grace

Pinterest365 – Day 56 – DIY Storage

Box StorageToday’s Pinterest365 is a DIY Storage solution that I was inspired to make when I saw this post on Pinterest.  I love the symmetry of the boxes, the clean appearance and the adorableness.

IMG_0479I have a collection of cubbies that I use for storage in the closet in my Craft room.  I removed the closet doors years ago so the space was visible.  Every now and then I wish I still had the doors so I could hide the mess :-).  But I don’t so my only course is to tidy things up.  As you can see I’ve let it get away from me, so when I saw this post, I knew exactly what I needed to do.

IMG_0478The best part for me with this project, besides the tidiness, is that it hasn’t cost me a dime.  I fished some used boxes out of my recycle bin and started to cut the pieces I would need.  The cubbies are an odd shape (10 1/2″ X 11″ X 9″), but once I had the pieces cut all I had to do was tape them together.  I only covered the front with scrapbook paper because it’s really the only part you see and I didn’t want to waste good scrapbook paper on something that won’t be seen.

IMG_0481IMG_0480As you can see, I haven’t gone for the “pretty” look.  I grabbed some index cards, scribbled down the contents of the box and taped it to the front.  I will fuss with “pretty” later.  Right now I just want to get things put away and organized in a logical and efficient manner.

I’m really pleased with the results.  Only 29 to go!  Grace

Celebrating our 25th Anniversary all Year

Mike and GraceMike and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this year on July 9th.  Last month as I was thinking through what I wanted to do in the new year, I thought about how we wanted to celebrate our day and then the idea popped into my head that we could celebrate all year, like the Queen.  She just celebrated her 60th year as the Monarch and they had a year-long party.  So that’s what we’re going to do.

Each month of this year on the 9th, we will pick some aspect of our wedding or the last 25 years to celebrate.  Today we will be listening to and watching our wedding ceremony.  IMG_0474The church taped (yes, on a cassette tape) the service for us and we’re going to dust that baby off and give it a listen.  I think I might transfer it to a CD while I’m at it.  A friend of the family also video taped the rehearsal and the ceremony.  I watched the rehearsal this morning and must admit, I actually had tears.  It’s going to be a wonderfully emotional day!  Grace

Pinterest365 – Day 55 – When Technology meets Organization

Okay, so the marriage of technology and organization is not a new thing, but being able to readily access that technology while you’re organizing is new to me.

iphoneIf you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that this is Day 25 of my Iphone 4s ownership.  I remember the sales guy asking me if I was excited about my new phone.  My response:  “I’m embarrassed to say how excited I am about this phone.  I’ve been waiting months for this day.”  I’ve been playing with the phone and all the features, taking the lion share of all my photos with it and exploring the limitless apps out there.  It’s been a lot to take in, but man has it been fun.

IMG_0462So what does this have to do with organizing?  One of the first apps I downloaded was called Wooly.  It’s connected with Ravelry, a place for knitters, crocheters, designers, spinners, weavers and dyers to keep track of their yarn, tools, project and pattern information, and look to others for ideas and inspiration.  With Wooly I can keep track of all my projects, know what yarn I have in my stash and what needle sizes I own.

IMG_0459As well as having a yarn stash to rival most yarn stores, I (and Mike) also love books.  I’m also notorious for forgetting which books I own and purchasing multiple copies.  Lame, I know.  I found an app called BooksApp that will keep track of all my books.  AND, it has a barcode scanner that looks up the book online and transfers all the information into my phone.  I was definitely doing the happy dance when I discovered that feature!

IMG_0458Krafts is an app that keeps track of all your crafting supplies.  It also has a barcode scanner that will scan in all the particulars of an item.  You have no idea how helpful this app will be.  As well as buying multiple copies of books, I routinely pick up craft supplies because “I think I ran out of that”.  I get home and find out that I have four of said item.

IMG_0456And finally, I’ve mentioned previously about my love of lists.  I found a list app (and there are 1000’s) called Paperless.  I used it today to make a list of all the recipes we like and the ingredients as well as a grocery list.  I organized IMG_0457my grocery list by areas of my store, decided what our meals would be for this next week and systematically went recipe by recipe adding the ingredients to the appropriate areas of the store.  Now I know you’re thinking, “This girl is nuts!”  and you’d be right, but I was able to do my grocery shopping and be home in less than 45 minutes.  It normally takes me an hour and a half.

IMG_0460Now, are these all organization methods that could be accomplished with pen and paper.  Absolutely!  But it wouldn’t be as much fun.  And being organized shouldn’t be dependent on technology, but the technology is available and as long as the electricity doesn’t fail and I keep paying my phone bill, I’ll take advantage of it to keep me organized.  Grace

IMG_0453“Trust me.  We know how much she likes this phone.  It comes on our walks!”

Pinterest365 – Day 53-54 – More Organizing Helps

I just discovered this morning that January is National Get Organized Month.  And with that in mind here are a few more organizing helps.  I’m continuing to sort through craft and home supplies and the ideas I find on Pinterest are incredibly helpful.  Here are a couple for today.

IMG_0437

Mason Jar Cupcake LinersP365 – Day 53 – I also love to collect cupcake liners.  Not for cupcakes per say, but for craft projects.  When I saw this post I marveled at how something so simple could be so genius.  Plus it has the added bonus of using a mason jar (another of my favorite things to collect).

Paint StorageIMG_0448P365 – Day 54 – I have a bit of paint in those 2-oz containers and had it stored out of sight.  And as you know for me out of sight is out of mind.  We had a bunch of used wood CD/cassette tape racks so I pulled out the insides, painted them a lovely vibrant purple and Mike helped me to put the racks on the wall.  They hold almost all the paint!  I love them because I can see what I have and it’s sorted by color.

Until tomorrow,  Grace

Pinterest 365 – Day 50-52 – Organizing Helps

Pinterest365Sorry for not keeping up with my daily Pinterest posts.  I got a little waylaid by the holidays, meant to start up on January 1st, but that day got away from me as well.  But never fear I’m back.

I will be catching up over the next few days, but hopefully within the week, I should be back to one Pinterest post per day.

To start the new year off right, I’ve been decluttering (I seem to be constantly decluttering) and trying to organize my craft and household supplies.  I have an unstated goal this year of trying to accomplish as many of my goals and activities without spending any or very little money.  I became aware of something called the Compact in a blog post entitled, “Are you ready to stop buying in 2013?” by one of my favorite bloggers, the Non-Consumer Advocate.  I have to say my initial response to the question was “YES!!!!!”

Here’s what Katy Wolk-Stanley (The Non-Consumer Advocate) has to say:

Buy nothing new for a year. It’s called The Compact, and it’s a world-wide movement where people make a one year commitment to stop buying new stuff. There are no official rules, and everyone puts their own twists and exceptions in their Compact. (For example, I allow purchases of new underwear and socks.) Because I have been participating in The Compact since 2007, my rules have relaxed and I do buy a few new things every now and then, but for the most part it’s a rarity.

Everyone brings their own personal motivation to the project, and for some the choice to avoid new stuff is purely environmental, while for others it’s a financial decision. Doesn’t matter, as it’s your decision, and the result is the same. Over manufacturing of unnecessary and overly packaged stuff is a huge global issue, and The Compact is a great way to take a personal stand.”

So I think I’m going to do my level best to try this.  Obviously I agree with the “new underwear and socks” exception, and I’m sure I’ll come up against other things as I go along, but after I found 50 mechanical pencils rounded up from various areas of the house, I knew something had to change.

So back to Pinterest and organization.  I have an organization board on Pinterest (I know, shocker!) and have pulled these ideas from there.

Glitter storageP365 – Day 50 – Glitter storage.  I have lots of glitter tucked away in boxes, and if you’re like me, out of sight, out of mind.  I saw this pin and decided to collect as much glitter as I could find (until I discover a gold mine later during a decluttering session) and pour it into these cute little baby salt & pepper shakers.  Before you ask, I already IMG_0441had these shakers in anticipation of this pin.  They look so cool in my glitter basket.  As a little extra tip, I use coffee filters to catch glitter when I’m working with it.  They’re really pliable and it’s easy to funnel the glitter back into its container.
IMG_0442

Spice Rack OrganizerP365 – Day 51 – Button storage.  I have been collecting buttons for years.  But they’re all in one big container and when I need a certain color, I have to go digging.  IMG_0445IMG_0443I saw this Pinterest post and thought I could take some Starbuck’s Frappaccino bottles that I’ve been saving (courtesy of a friend) and team them up with this handy spice rack.  As you can see each bottle holds a different color of button and fits quite nicely in the rack.  Now I just need to find the perfect space for this in my craft room.

Toilet Paper Roll OrganizerP365 – Day 52 – Organizing cords with toilet paper rolls.  Another fabulous use for those toilet paper rolls.  I found a box to IMG_0447house the toilet paper rolls and then started sorting my cords.  We were given a Blu-ray player (nice, I know) and Mike was hooking it up yesterday, but needed a certain cord.  I went to our cord box and spent quite a bit of time untangling and sorting before I found the right one.  Seeing this post convinced me that there is a better way.

Until tomorrow,Grace

IMG_0293“Sooooo… are bones included in this ‘no buying new’ deal?  We think your exclusion list should be – underwear, socks and bones.”

Goals for 2013

I love starting.  The excitement, the newness, the freshness of the start.  Actually as Mike so delicately pointed out yesterday, what I really love is ‘planning’ to start.  And he would be right.  I love planning more than I love execution, but I’m working on changing that or at least having more balance.  I also tend to err on the side of over-planning as you will discover from my goal list, but as my mom pointed out the other day, that just seems to be how I am.

I’m writing my “Goals for 2013” post today rather than tomorrow because I want to hit the ground running tomorrow.  I know they’re usually called “Resolutions”, but over the past few years (decades) I’ve learned that I don’t keep resolutions, but I do work on goals.  I only have one rule for my goals.  They must move me forward in the areas of my life that I deem the most important.  Beside each goal, I have an area or areas of my life where this activity impacts because I want my time to be spent doing purposeful things.

I also spent a month identifying areas in my life where I wanted to commit to change.  You will see some of those on the list.

In no particular order:

1.  Run/walk the 2013 Honolulu Marathon with Mike (health, diet, weight, 25th wedding anniversary)
2.  Read more (personal growth, family)
3.  Blog everyday (personal growth, business)
4.  Paint kitchen cabinets (home)
5.  Make jean quilts for couch (home)
6.  Keep up with daily chores (home)
7.  Organize craft room (home, finances, business, hobbies)
8.  Continue to not eat wheat and reduce sugar (health, diet, weight)
9.  Celebrate our 25th anniversary all year – just like the Queen (marriage)
10.  Gift giving plan (family, friends, finances)
11.  Read the Bible through in a year (personal growth)
12.  Grow “A Thoughtful Paws” (business)
13.  Document my days – Project Life, CaptureYour365, Nieces & Nephews (hobbies, personal growth, family)
14.  Complete two paper crafting classes (hobbies)
15.  Knitting projects – Knit-a-square, shawls, hats, scarves, sweater (personal growth, hobbies)
16.  Yard – finish retaining wall and brick patio (home)
17.  Grow my Etsy shop (business, hobbies)
18.  Eat 95% of our meals at home (health, finances)

What does your 2013 look like?   Grace

Picture 700“We have lots planned for 2013.  Mom bought this book called ‘101 Dog Tricks’ and we’re going to learn some of them.  I’m sure she’ll post video if we actually learn them.”
