Day 13 of Make Madness – DIY Cell Phone Cover

58deb7761e347217fd0c395ba79157fdIn the interest of full disclosure, I have to admit I’ve done this craft before.  In fact, I spent an afternoon with my niece cutting up scrapbook paper for different covers for my cell phone.

After my doodling episode, though, I want to make a cover using techniques and designs that are all my own.

Until this evening,

Grace

Thirteen Today

Woody turns 13 today.  In honor of his special day, I thought I would tell you the 13 Reasons I Love Woody.

Woody13

IMG_50601.  He loves to walk.  Even though he’s 13, you’d never know it on our walks.  People are often surprised when I say how old he is.  He’s a spritely dude.

IMG_00162.  He adapts really well to other dogs.  I often take care of friends and family’s dogs and Woody is very welcoming.

IMG_3877 (5)3.  He puts up with me wanting to see him in funny headbands.

4.  He always comes when he hears the sound of my spoon clinking against my breakfast bowl.  He gets to lick the spoon.  01537d33170cadfbf6283f0dc6d4188fde571888df

01a77d33646082d63724dfa844c26e05bbbb0063725.  He is a true love-bug.

6.  He has one blue eye.  It’s his signature.

7.  He howls a doggie opera at the sound of an ice-cream truck.

010e0e55ecee2796f18cedb9bc72bdeb4b577745248.  He loves to cuddle on my side of the bed.

9.  He is my own personal alarm clock.  I can count on being woken between 5:15am and 6am every day.  This requires some adjustment with daylight savings.

IMG_0041 (2)10.  He woo-woo’s when he’s playing ball and can play for hours.

12.  He is such a gentle soul.  And a constant source of calm.

IMG_547913.  He puts up with Mindy’s very strong need to herd (German Shepherd/Border Collie mix) and lick his face.

We do love him and am so glad he came to stay with us.  Happy Birthday Woody!!!!

Day 12 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – Watercolor Chart

Day 12 – Watercolor Chart

011853f483d807fabaa32b2257f39dcfff9705a5b9On a trip to England years ago, I came across a television show whose host went from town to town sketching the sights and then watercoloring the image.  At the end of each episode they showed a still of the location that then morphed into the watercolored sketch.  I couldn’t wait for each episode – it was mesmerizing.

I know I’ll get around to actually trying this craft for real, but for now I like using the paints to color my stamped, embossed images and running stripes of color on cards.

01fc34baafbdcdba6e7be0bfccf4329716b38b0fc9

Making this color chart was not only fun, but it gave me a better feel for working with the colors and how the amount of water affects the saturation of the color.  It also gave me intense respect for those who do it well.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

When you get around to this watercoloring thing, you should use me, Woody and Mindy as subjects.

Day 12 of Make Madness – Watercolor Chart

9500a7433ab1dea2d24e6d26a64da31aOf all the painting mediums, I love watercolor the best.  And more than that – I love color.  While I can’t watercolor, I do use watercolors with my card making especially when coloring embossed images.

I think this tutorial was one of the first that I added to my boards on Pinterest.  Can’t wait to see how this turns out.

Come back tonight to see how I did.

Until this evening,

Grace

Day 11 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – Mod Melts

Make Madness

Day 11 – Mod Melts

f1989a6d1da37497b6d8a0195c1a03ecWhen I embellish cards or scrapbook pages, I’m always drawn to buttons and button-type decorations.  When I discovered Mod Melts in my local Michaels, I was excited to see if they would work out as handmade embellishments. Mod Melts are manufactured by the same company that makes Mod Podge, the decoupage glue.

IMG_3124All you need is a high temp glue gun, the specially designed glue sticks and the molds.  There are many choices of molds – the ones I have are flowers, butterflies, frames and ephemera.

At first blush, this would seem incredibly simple and it was to a certain degree.  I filled the molds with the melted stick and within minutes out popped the embellishment.  That part worked out great.

IMG_3121If you want to try this craft, you’re going to want to over-fill the molds. Don’t!  This does create a beautiful, detailed embellishment, but it also creates an ugly edging that you need to cut away with an Exacto knife.  For the molds that have straight edges it works pretty well, but for any that are highly detailed with curved edges – it doesn’t look so good.

After a few failed tries, I filled the mold to right below the edge and these pieces turned out great.  The sticks come in two varieties:  opaque white and clear.  I’ve had these a while so the clear had turned a bit yellow.  Don’t wait to use these like I did.  The nice part is that the pieces can be painted so it doesn’t really matter which stick you use.  If you do, however, want the sea glass look, don’t let them sit.

IMG_3116IMG_3117I painted a few with a pearlized acrylic, some with a chalk ink and left the others alone.  I’ve heard that alcohol inks work really well on these, but I ran out of time to try.  Next time.

I’ll definitely try this again, but this is one of those projects that falls into the category of “better in my head than in reality”.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

Those look awesome mom, but I didn’t notice any paws or bones.  Do they not make molds with those essential dog shapes?  They must not because I know it would have been the first mold you would have bought.

Day 10 – Doodles

01e72b9d55e445f38192f29911f581fbb99e06b439Well today’s project was incredibly relaxing.  I highly recommend it.   I started in the corner of a blank sheet of paper with a black PITT artist pen.   I looked through some of the doodles at TanglePatterns.com and changed the design when I felt like it.  I was so excited about the idea of doodling, I started a Pinterest board.

01fe3fa1b14a198d0a17bce0c3933efd0870cdbad6When I had filled half the page, I started coloring.  Using my Stampin’ Up markers, I just dotted color around in a fairly haphazard fashion.  I love that there are no rules to this – you just go with the flow.  It’s a good process for me because I can be pretty formulaic when I create and I need to give myself permission to just be.

01c60e3f9afb2f43c1ea601fc5e3e0759eca80f61eHere are closeups of today’s doodle.

Day 10 {Make Madness} – Doodles

Make Madness

Day 10 of Make Madness – Doodles

linda-farmer-tangle-1-300x300Making the washi tape yesterday reminded me of when I used to color whole sheets of papers with doodles as a kid.  I would take a blank sheet of paper and a black pen, scribble a series of loops and shapes and then spend the afternoon coloring in the spaces.

It’s incredibly relaxing to doodle, so much so there’s a term called Zentangle – Zen+tangle.  Apparently it’s so relaxing it can bring on a zen-like state.  I don’t know if that ever happened to me, but I do know doodling was calming and peaceful.

I found a website called TanglePatterns.com with hundreds of zentangle patterns.  This seems to be advanced doodling and I’m excited to give it a try.

Come back tonight to see how I did.

Until this evening,

Grace

Day 9 {Make Madness} – Part 2 – DIY Washi Tape

Make Madness

Day 9 – DIY Washi Tape

Today’s project was a lot of fun and the tutorial was excellent.  I used deli paper (the same stuff sandwiches are wrapped in), sharpie pens and a Xyron sticker maker to add adhesive to the back of the tape strips.

012ef1c6b67d9fa3b2cb61e5eca2fa08645013fce90112d482cf3bb2c4f19e1aa4a516a225ec90883dc90130853484a902df51f7f2e8e14b870cd9199c260f01518263b583211778a5e0bed66d8924d23a42fad4

I made 1/2″ strips on the deli paper and colored them in a variety of colors and styles.  Washi tape is know for being translucent and the deli paper provided the translucent look and feel.  After finishing the strips, I cut them out and ran them through my sticker maker.

01852035831ab0d1daa6f13422ede3813d07f0b06d01db7881e742b614a92b388953b3918298f93467ca01b83f00ce3f83d9e54c300575c4781d0610019ddd

While this was relaxing and cool, it was time consuming and probably expensive compared to just buying a roll of Washi tape.  That being said, the nice part about this technique is that I can make the strips as wide as I want and create any manner of design or wording (although my block lettering needs practice).  I’m still glad I made these strips of ‘washi tape’.  I’ll definitely use them in future projects.

Until tomorrow,

Grace

Hey I noticed some dog paws.  Are those for Woody’s present?
