Ornament #23 – Dr. Who Tardis {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #23 – Dr. Who Tardis 01d0fca706fa673fb80699d27c43086030e72db701

According to Brownielocks (a website dedicated to Bizarre, Crazy, Silly, Unknown Holidays & Observances) today is Dr. Who Day.  November 23, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who and so, it seems, November 23rd has been deemed ‘Dr. Who Day’.  Google marked the day with this fun Doodle:  Google Doodle.

Mike and I are huge fans of the series.  Mike loves all 50 years of the 12 doctors, whereas I’m more partial to the series that began with the 9th doctor.  My favorite doctor by far is the one played by David Tennant.

01d0fca706fa673fb80699d27c43086030e72db701I made two Dr. Who related projects today.  First, the ornament, a felt replica of the Tardis (the Dr.’s -Time And Relative Dimension In Space- ship).  It’s actually a British Police Call Box that’s bigger on the inside.  This is a fairly large ornament (2 1/2″X4″), but because I was using felt and needed to cut very detailed pieces, it needed to be bigger.

Here are some closeups of the fabric.

Item #45 – Knit 1 square per week for Knit-a-square.

Knit-a-square is an organization in South Africa that collects knitted and crocheted 8″X8″ squares to make blankets for orphans affected by AIDS.

This video does a wonderful job of describing the organization and their mission.

Question of the Day:  What is one of your favorite moments from any Christmas movie?
Mine is from White Christmas:

Susan and the General enter the ballroom to find two rows of soldiers forming a path to the stage.
Bob Wallace: [Stepping up to the General and saluting] Troops ready for inspection, sir!
Joe, Adjutant Captain: [at the General’s side] Just routine, sir.
Gen. Thomas F. Waverly: [“inspecting the troops” at the inn] I am not satisfied with the conduct of this division. Some of you men are under the impression having been at Anzio entitles you not to wear neckties. Well you’re wrong. Neckties will be worn in this area! And look at the rest of your appearance. You’re a disgrace to the outfit. You’re soft! You’re sloppy! You’re unruly! You’re undisciplined!
[pause]
Gen. Thomas F. Waverly: And I never saw anything look so wonderful in my whole life! Thank you all.

Grace

Saturday Snippets | November 22, 2014

Welcome to Saturday Snippets.  This is where I share links and odd bits of info from the past week.

Pride and Prejudice1.  Love Jane Austen? Particularly Pride and Prejudice?  Well today’s your lucky day.

“The first-ever fully annotated edition of one of the most beloved novels in the world is a sheer delight for Jane Austen fans. Here is the complete text of Pride and Prejudice with thousands of annotations on facing pages, including:
• Explanations of historical context – Rules of etiquette, class differences, the position of women, legal and economic realities, leisure activities, and more.
• Citations from Austen’s life, letters, and other writings – Parallels between the novel and Austen’s experience are revealed, along with writings that illuminate her beliefs and opinions.
• Definitions and clarifications – Archaic words, words still in use whose meanings have changed, and obscure passages are explained.
• Literary comments and analyses
• Maps and illustrations of places and objects mentioned in the novel.
• An introduction, a bibliography, and a detailed chronology of events.”

Here’s the link to purchase this e-book.

Serial2.  I was introduced to a podcast this week called Serial.  Let me just say, it’s gripping.  Here’s what they say about themselves:  “Serial is a podcast where we unfold one nonfiction story, week by week, over the course of a season. We’ll stay with each story for as long as it takes to get to the bottom of it.

We’ll release new episodes every Thursday morning. Listeners can subscribe for free to the Serial podcast on iTunes and other audio platforms, and can also listen here on this site. Serial, like This American Life, is a production of WBEZ Chicago.”

Here’s the introduction to episode 1:  It’s Baltimore, 1999. Hae Min Lee, a popular high-school senior, disappears after school one day. Six weeks later detectives arrest her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. He says he’s innocent – though he can’t exactly remember what he was doing on that January afternoon. But someone can. A classmate at Woodlawn High School says she knows where Adnan was. The trouble is, she’s nowhere to be found.

Ornament #22 – Felt Kitty Cat {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #22 – Felt Kitty Cat014178323a83826f98bc42b3fecc61873fcf7f7c8d

What????  A cat ornament???

While I generally regard myself as a “dog person”, I had cats growing up and I have a lot of friends that own some adorable felines.  Also when I spotted this little guy on Pinterest, I could resist his cuteness.

The dogs aren’t sure what to make of this.  They’ll tell you all about it at the end of the post.

016a865a9e4d09aaf92809a021e1e3f577fa7e75eaI used light gray, dark gray and light tan felt and embroidery floss with a little bit of polyester fiberfill for stuffing.  I found these Christmas tree buttons that I’ve had for decades and I thought they looked good on these guys.  I used a running stitch on the light gray guy and a blanket stitch on the dark gray and the light tan kitties.

Here are some closeups.

I know I’m already committed to reading 24 books with Quest46, but I wanted to add this one in.  I’ve watched the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice about 1,000 times and can quote actual lines from the show/book, but I’ve never actually read the book.  Time I changed that.

Ornament #21 – Beaded Icicles {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #21 – Beaded Icicles0135226adf4786f515afc85ecd6246b4916e701a37

The last stage of tree decorating when I was a kid involved tossing handfuls of silvery tinsel onto the tree.  I think this was my favorite part.  As the tinsel hit the white twinkle lights, the tree appeared to sparkle; it’s what gave Christmas that magical quality for me.

When I saw these beaded icicles on Pinterest, I imagined a whole tree covered in them with white light bouncing off the glittery beads and instantly I remembered decorating our tree as a kid.

011ee2850f9f7c50b8a25c32d7e9732fbd948cbde9These were very easy to make.  I had spare wire, but I’m not sure about the guage.  It was thin enough to bend around a metal pipe to make the corkscrew shape, but thick enough that it needed to be cut with wire cutters.  The beads I used ranged in size from 3/8″ down to seed beads.  I made a multi-colored strand and then shifted to single color strands.  I strung them on the straight wire then coiled it after it was complete.  I tried stringing the beads after the wire was coiled but they wouldn’t cooperate.

Here are some closeups.

Ornament #20 – Tiny Yarn Basket {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #20 -Tiny Yarn Basket018544a46a4443906e913fccfa89eb0fac946a9cc3

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’ve always been fascinated by miniature things.  I also love knitting and all things related to yarn, so when I found this tiny yarn basket ornament, it seemed as if all my worlds were colliding! In a good way ;-).

My grandmother (my mom’s mom) was an excellent knitter.  I still have a couple of cardigans she made for me when I was a young adult.  I certainly appreciated them then, but mostly because she made them for me, not because of the craftsmanship that went into them.  These days, I admire them (and her) because I know what’s involving in constructing them.  On our (my mom and I) last trip to Da’s (my grandpa), I brought home her button stash and recognized many of the buttons from cardigans she sent us over the years.

I don’t know about you, but I love giving handmade gifts.  Certainly there’s the personal joy I get from being able to make something, but equally there’s the joy I feel at being able to craft something specifically for that individual.  It’s a precarious position you put yourself in though because not everybody enjoys ‘receiving’ handmade gifts.  I’ve learned to be very selective over the years about what and who I make things for.  There’s nothing better than spending hours on a project for someone you love and having them really appreciate your thoughtfulness and effort, AND there’s nothing worse than someone treating your gift as though you stepped out quickly to the store to purchase it when in reality your spent months creating it just for them.  The greatest lesson I’ve learned in the handmade gift arena is: My desire to hand make gifts DOES NOT always equal people’s desire to receive handmade gifts!  Proceed with caution!

01b4e9ee83c65391d770ce71185f0a09bd832b6e3a01f9cc8660c8a84187897e011b271c2f2a0922b059This little yarn basket was super easy to make.  I used this pattern from Red Heart and was amazed at how quickly it knit up.  I used scraps of colored yarn to make the tiny balls of yarn and took two beads and hot-glued them to toothpicks for the needles.  So much fun!

Item #42 – Put together a team for the local SPCA Doggie Dash in June, 2015.

Every year our local SPCA has a 2k/5k run/walk called the Doggie Dash to raise funds for their programs.  I’ve participated in the past as a volunteer and a walker, but this next year I’d like to put a team together of walkers/runners and their dogs to raise some much needed funds for this great organization.  After all, they are the whole reason I have Woody and Ellie ;-).

Question of the Day:  What handmade gifts, if any, do you make at Christmas?

Ornament #19 – Tiny Sweater Ornament {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #19 -Tiny Sweater Ornament   015c32f2a789519cdd758d5df1c542ffbdf972664c

I’ve always been fascinated by miniature things.  I love doll houses with all the tiny furniture, appliances and decorated rooms.  As a kid I remember going to a miniature village where as you walked down the streets, you towered over the buildings.  When I discovered miniature gardens, I knew I just had to give it a try (that’s one of my Quest46 activities).

0114b5e957b9ed6ae63659f8779b887c4132d319feSo you can imagine how jazzed I was when I stumbled upon these tiny sweater ornaments.  I used this pattern, had to teach myself how to do a “backwards loop cast on” (big thank you to Staci at VeryPink.com for the excellent YouTube tutorial), had great aspirations of making 20 or so, but only made one in the time I had.

01dae8c2bd3fbd0ed142c6ec5f361951bf80fa9e9aI only made one sweater mostly because of the learning curve.  The pattern is really simple, but I had never cast on extra stitches in the middle of a project and had to stop to learn how to do that.  I know the next few will go a lot faster.

01298de7fbac28a067a5bb98980ef690c40cb23187And to add to the Eek!! cuteness factor, I made a little hanger out of a jumbo paper clip for my tiny sweater.  I used this tutorial.

Ornament #18 – Glitter Stars {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #18 – Glitter Stars01a465247a5586510ed684520a90c7d4dd01111e71

Growing up, we never put a star on the top of our tree.  We always put an angel.  She was dressed beautifully in white and she fit perfectly at the top of our tree.   After we were married, I really don’t remember what Mike and I used to top our tree, but I’m thinking it was some kind of angel.  We didn’t really do much decoration wise in the early years of our marriage because we always celebrated at our parent’s homes.  When you don’t have kids and you’re both working and/or going to school, you try to find ways to not add extra things to your plate.  When we moved into our first house, though, we didn’t hold back on the decorations, but there still wasn’t anything sentimental about any of our ornaments.

The first piece of decoration was the Precious Moments Nativity Scene my mom gave me for my birthday. Over the years, word spread that I liked Santa Clauses and snowmen, and soon I had quite a little collection.  But the tree topper wasn’t a big deal.  When Woody arrived on the scene, we needed to abandon a traditional tree because of his propensity to think of it as he own indoor bathroom and we moved to an artificial tree that could sit on a counter top.  Then we entered the wall tree phase.  I love this phase.  Not only does the wall tree free up counter space for me to display more Santa Clauses and snowmen, but I can keep it up year round.  And suddenly it became really important to me to find the perfect tree topper.  I found a red metal star last year, but it’s not ideally what I want.

01c452ec8b561ec48f457487c725817e8e5157b03201d20334167ca8646b7234ff2b40771d960be0dd5f01a1919d65be8c36a0e56a4f417636d0d3b65c1799018ade9f4d5949415da3327f4235b739ec5576b0b5_00001Until now!!!  Today’s ornament is the topper I want.  It’s a simple star folded so that it looks 3-dimensional (I followed this tutorial).  For the large stars, I mod podged sheet music (White Christmas) to the front of the star, inked the edges and ran a bead of glitter down the spines.  On the smaller stars, I mod podged tissue paper, inked the edges and also ran a bead of glitter down the spines.  With all the stars, I punched a hole and added ribbon.

Close ups.

In my defense, I was young when I mistakenly lifted my leg on mom’s Christmas tree.  I’m a lot older and wiser now AND she no longer puts trees in the house.

Ornament #17 – Pinecones {30 Days of Christmas Ornaments}

30 Days Christmas OrnamentsOrnament #17 – Pinecones  01c1d58c9b8c9cf72ac8de38c598a41641c788f7f9

When the dogs and I go on our walk in the mornings we take the same route.  It can get a bit monotonous for me, but it’s their walk not mine so I don’t complain.  A couple of the houses we pass by everyday have pine trees that drop the most interesting pine cones.  The first trees cones aren’t the traditional pine cone shape. They’re shaped like roses and I pick them up every chance I get.  The second house has a tree that drops what I call “wee little pine 018bf1d8fa8fa5606f0ab60772e8126c5728cb3383012231f490152badb142e244fbed921ac6ecb2e407cones” because they’re super tiny.  We (I mean me) love going by this house after a windy day because the sidewalk is littered with these little gems.  I stuff my pockets to the brim with no real objective other than to admire their cuteness.

Until now!  Today’s two ornaments were made using my pine cones.  I kept this really simple, both in materials and technique.  I cut scrap cardboard to serve as a base for my design.  For the round ornament, I hot-glued the tiny pine cones in a ring around a rose pine cone and then sprayed them with spray adhesive and sprinkled them with glittery dust.

0189171daba097d3bcf24c55dbb7fd999e5c9d72c9The second ornament, the rectangular shaped one, I, once again, took a scrap piece of cardboard and hot-glued the tiny pine cones in a rectangle shape and then place two artificial roses in the middle.  To both of the ornaments, I added ribbon on the back.

I have a lot more pine cones to work with and even think a simple pine cone with a beautiful bow on top could be pretty on a tree.

I wrote about my dog bed design in a post called Anatomy of a Dog Bed.  I have sold a few through my Etsy shop and received very complimentary reviews.  I plan to make more beds and continue to develop my design.

We’d love to stay and chat, but we’re on  our way to the pine cone houses.  Momma loves those pine cones and we love momma so we go.

Paws || Walk On – 11.9 – 11.22

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.
