Growing up, we never put a star on the top of our tree. We always put an angel. She was dressed beautifully in white and she fit perfectly at the top of our tree. After we were married, I really don’t remember what Mike and I used to top our tree, but I’m thinking it was some kind of angel. We didn’t really do much decoration wise in the early years of our marriage because we always celebrated at our parent’s homes. When you don’t have kids and you’re both working and/or going to school, you try to find ways to not add extra things to your plate. When we moved into our first house, though, we didn’t hold back on the decorations, but there still wasn’t anything sentimental about any of our ornaments.
The first piece of decoration was the Precious Moments Nativity Scene my mom gave me for my birthday. Over the years, word spread that I liked Santa Clauses and snowmen, and soon I had quite a little collection. But the tree topper wasn’t a big deal. When Woody arrived on the scene, we needed to abandon a traditional tree because of his propensity to think of it as he own indoor bathroom and we moved to an artificial tree that could sit on a counter top. Then we entered the wall tree phase. I love this phase. Not only does the wall tree free up counter space for me to display more Santa Clauses and snowmen, but I can keep it up year round. And suddenly it became really important to me to find the perfect tree topper. I found a red metal star last year, but it’s not ideally what I want.
Until now!!! Today’s ornament is the topper I want. It’s a simple star folded so that it looks 3-dimensional (I followed this tutorial). For the large stars, I mod podged sheet music (White Christmas) to the front of the star, inked the edges and ran a bead of glitter down the spines. On the smaller stars, I mod podged tissue paper, inked the edges and also ran a bead of glitter down the spines. With all the stars, I punched a hole and added ribbon.
Close ups.

In my defense, I was young when I mistakenly lifted my leg on mom’s Christmas tree. I’m a lot older and wiser now AND she no longer puts trees in the house.
Oh Woody, you so make me chuckle!
We actually use the Angel I had when I was growing up.
Waterford tree topper on one tree and a star on another tree. My sister-in-law made us an angel that we also use.
*gasps* GLITTER. Those are so pretty. Do you have a post about/picture of your wall tree?
And we put a star on ours! It’s really old and it’s got what looks like a baby’s face on it. I’m not sure why.
Thanks so much. I do have a post here – https://whilewalkingmydogs.com/2012/12/03/pinterest-365-day-33-christmas-tree/
The picture in the post, however, was only of my tree when I started decorating. Strangely enough I don’t have a really good one of it when I finished. Here are some poor substitutes (and by poor, I mean poor pictures) I’ll have to do much better this year 😉
Oh my goodness, the picture in that post looks so cool!! I want to do that I LOVE THAT IDEA. Unfortunately, my computer does not seem to want to load those other pictures. 😦 I’m sure it was gorgeous though.
Used to use a very old blown glass tree topper, but it will not fit over thick artifical tree top stem. We use an angel on the artificial tree. I still have the blown glass one.
A 46 year old angel.
For years we topped our tree with an angel then switch to a star 3 years ago.
When Andy and I had our first Christmas, my niece Mollie was 4 and had made us a paper angel that she had colored and put glitter and stickers on. Our family now has a star that every year the person who had found the pickle on the tree the year before gets to put on the tree.
I’ve heard about the pickle in the tree, but never knew anyone that did it.
Ya we do the pickle in the tree:) The person who finds the pickle on Christmas morning gets to open the first gift, and they get to put the star on the tree the next year!
