Paws || Walk On – 6.6 – 6.20

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.

Paws | Week of 6.6-6.13

Re-Organizing the Hall Closet

Recently, two events conspired to “force” me to clean out and rearrange our hall closet.

Event #1:  Clean Mama started a Simple Summer Challenge where you take one area of your house and clean it out.  I’m a sucker for challenges so I started to think about which area of the house I wanted to tackle (I have lots of options).  I still didn’t have an idea until Event #2 happened.

Event #2:  When Mindy came to live with us last year, we soon discovered that she believed her primary job in life was to protect the dog food bin.  We’ve kept a Rubbermaid 20lb plastic bin in our kitchen area for 25+ years and have never had an issue – until now.  She wasn’t aggressive or anything, but when friend’s dogs would come to stay, Mindy would camp out in front of the food bin and protect it at night.  I guess she didn’t feel that it needed protecting during the day, but night was a different story.  Every now and then I would hear her bark (extremely unusual for her) and know that someone (dog) had ventured too close for her comfort.  Suffice it to say, we needed an alternate plan.  We started by storing the bin in Mike’s office, but after a while that really didn’t work.  Then, in a flash of inspiration, I thought about the hall closet.

A lot would have to be rearranged and reorganized, but I’m so glad I took up the challenge because it’s made all the difference.  Here are some before and after photos.

Hall Closet BeforeAs you can see, this basically became a dumping ground for lots of miscellaneous stuff.  I started by removing the plastic storage bins on the right as well as an extra picnic basket.  I’m not entirely sure why I kept one because we never picnic, but maybe one of these days…

I installed a hook on the left wall just inside the door for our aprons as well as a Tap light on the right side wall just inside the door.

Here is the after photo and some close-ups:

Hall Closet After5Hall Closet After11Hall Closet After10Hall Closet After9Hall Closet After4Hall Closet After6Hall Closet After2Hall Closet AfterHall Closet After3Originally I had our cleaners on the bottom shelf, but I moved them up to the top to get them away from the dog food.

As much as I could, I tried to consolidate items for easy retrieval.

In the process of cleaning out this closet, I discovered a box of Tap Lights.  We needed light, so I added Velcro to the back and stuck it to the wall.  Does a great job.

I also consolidated my cleaning rags and reusable grocery bags.

And of course, the dog food bin.  Works like a charm and we’ve had peace in the house Hall Closet After14ever since. 😉
I use two Rubbermaid containers for our new and old batteries.  When the old container gets full I just take the batteries to our local Staples for disposal.

We keep our fanny packs and travel bags in here by looping them around the closet rod.  Makes it super easy when we need them for a long walk or for a trip.

And finally, I stored our picnic basket, water coolers and thermoses on the top shelf as well as decluttered our multi-pocket over-the-door organizer.  I Goodwill-ed a bunch of stuff (fairly certain I won’t need a set of Dora-the-Explorer dominos), threw out a few things and am feeling really good about this FINISHED project.

In my last Paws || Walk On post, I quoted Walt Disney who said, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”  I’ve been ‘talking’ about cleaning out this closet for ages and now, with the help of a challenge and a vigilant dog, I’m done… until I need to sort it out again ;-).

Until next time,

Grace

If you need me, I’ll be hanging out in front of the hall closet.

Summer Challenges

I’m a sucker for challenges and lists with things to accomplish and conquer.  I don’t always complete the challenges (or lists of things), but I love to dive in the proverbial deep end and give it my best shot.

Since June 1, the blog-a-sphere has been inundated with summer challenges galore.  And I’ve been drawn in like a moth to a flame.  Here are just a few that have caught my interest.

Clean Mama’s Simple Summer Challenge – I’m always in need of help when it comes to keeping the house tidy.

Index Card a Day – “Starting June 1 create something on a 3×5″ index card every day for 61 days. On the back of each card, add a number to keep track of your progress. ICAD #1, #2, etc. Whatever day you start, it is your own official ICAD #1. Motto: You do not need to catch up, just start.”  That’s good to know ;-).

Through the Loops Mystery Shawl – I want to do this, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep their timetable.  I’ve chosen my yarn (Knit Picks Palette Yarn), but it hasn’t arrived yet.  The pattern calls for two solid colors so I chose Eggplant and a green.  I’ve narrowed down the green to two choices and ordered both so I could decide in person.  Thankfully the yarn is reasonably priced and I only need a total of 4 skeins.  Here are the colors.  Which do you think I should go with???  The Green Tea Heather or the Edamame????  This is my first Mystery anything.

Book Bingo 2015 – I just started listening to a new podcast called “Books on the Night Stand”.  It’s really good and they’re doing a summer challenge called Book Bingo 2015.  Here’s my card.   Obviously I’m combining this with my Quest46 reading challenge (24 books this year), but I love the spontaneous nature of this challenge.  Check out my progress at Goodreads.

I’m sorry I’ve not been around lately.  As silly as this sounds, the Bird Series kind of fried me.  I won’t be doing a series this month, but will certainly be posting several times a week.

As always, thank you for stopping by…

Grace

Rusty and Ellie

And you’ve been busy taking care of us and our friends.  We require a lot of time and attention.

• didn’t doodle at all this week with the a 100 day project.   I have decided to try this again later.
• walked the dogs.  Decided to keep track of our walks on a calendar.  So far for 2015: 125 out of 152.
• finished the blog series {Bird, Bird, Bird is the Word} sort of abruptly.  I’m happy with the number of birds and I still plan to add more as the year progresses.
Handcrafted Beauty Workshop• most of the reason for abrupt finish of the Bird series was to spend the week setting up a Handcrafted Beauty Workshop for the ladies at my church.  It was so much fun!  We made Lavender Foot Soak, Rose Petal Bath Salts, Citrus Sugar Scrub and Peppermint Lip Balm (not shown).
• continued with the Ripple Crochet Blanket for a wedding gift.
01155186f43602eca1bd1bb0336efa46e2dce65c7d_00001• still working on Margaret’s scarf.
