Quest 46 | Crochet a Ripple Blanket

Quest46LogoItem #5:  A Ripple Blanket??? What’s that????

As you know, creating and making stuff brings me a lot of joy.  I can trace this compulsion back to when I was 4 and my mom gave me a set of sewing cards and some yarn.  From there I tried crochet, knitting, painting, sewing, needlework, glass etching, took metal and wood shop in Jr. High, stamping, papercrafting, beading, jewelry making, soap making and I’m sure a few more things I’ve forgotten about.

Attic24 Ripple Blanket2So when I sat down to put together my Quest46 list, I had to include a crafts category.  I’m constantly finding projects on Pinterest and through blogs that I add to my “To Do” list.  I’m well aware that my “To Do” list will outlive me, but that’s okay, I keep adding ideas every day.

Attic24 Ripple BlanketOne of the bloggers I follow is Lucy from Attic24.  She’s an incredibly talented crocheter who creates beautiful blankets, bags, flowers, birds, leaves, you name it-if you can crochet it, she has a tutorial for it.  Her patterns and tutorials are very easy to understand (and I believe they’re all free) and her use of color in her work is inspiring.  And I’ve wanted to make one of her Ripple Blankets for a few years now.  Isn’t that breathtaking????

IMG_0690So in the 365 days following my 46th birthday (in November), I will crochet a Ripple Blanket using this collection of yarn.  I keep out living room furniture covered with blankets and quilts because of the dogs and I’m ready for a change.  I’m not sure how long it will take me to make this, but crochet tends to be quick so I might make two – one for the couch and one for our bed.  We’ll see.

Just want you to know – we love blankets because we LOVE sleeping on the couch especially when our friends stay over.IMG_4096

Anatomy of a Dog Bed

I remember the first dog bed I bought for Sugar, our first dog.  It was a green pillow that fit into a basket and had just enough room for her and her stuffed toy bee.  It wasn’t long before she outgrew that bed and convinced us that she was happiest when she was sleeping with us in our bed, specifically on my side.  She had a dog bed, but preferred cuddling up with me.  And, truth be told, I preferred that as well.

IMG_0103

Ellie (9 weeks old) in Woody’s bed

We’ve always bought beds for our dogs, but none of them really every fit the bill when it came to color/pattern choices, accidents or general cleanliness.  I wanted to get the fancy ones with zippers, but they were just too expensive and when Ellie was a puppy, the idea of zippers (metal parts she could chew and ingest) was completely out.  Woody really liked his dog beds, but Ellie always commandeered them for herself (even though she had her own) and he would end up on the carpet next to her looking very sorry for himself.

A couple of years ago I decided to whip out the old sewing machine and put together two dog beds, one for each dog.  I wrote about it here and the dogs loved these beds.  I found really cute fabric and they used them all the time – they even let their friends use them.  I called them Dog Bed 1.0.  They were a single bed stuffed with polyester fiberfill and sewn shut.

Over time, the beds became stinky and worn, and marked on by visiting doggy friends.  I usually caught the ‘offender’ and quickly cleaned the bed before the urine soaked in, but the day came when I realized that I had missed an incident and the beds were beyond salvaging.  I could have removed the stuffing, washed the material and started over, but that seemed a little toooooo much work.  What I needed was a better design.

So I took some time to think about what I wanted in a dog bed and came up with Dog Bed 2.0.  Over the past few months, I’ve been experimenting with a dog bed design that meets the needs of both dog and owner.  As a consumer of many dog beds, I designed my dog beds to address the needs that I had and the basic needs of most pet owners.

dog bed puppy paw fleece top flower medallion green pink 27X34dog bed canvas base lime green 26x231. Durability – My beds are made with a 100% polyester anti-pill fleece top and a heavyweight 100% cotton canvas base. Soft and cuddly for the dog and durable for the floor.

2. Washable – All my fabrics are pre-washed and the finished beds are machine washable/tumble dried. Makes it great for freshening up a well used bed or in the event of accidents.  We’ve already washed Ellie’s bed a couple of times and it comes up brand new every time-so easy.

dog bed velcro closure lime green3. Convenience – My Velcro closure allows for easy removal/replacement of pillow inserts. My experience with Ellie as a pup was the #1 reason I decided to go with Velcro.  She was a puppy that ate EVERYTHING and the Velcro closure removes the possibility of zippers breaking as well as puppies and younger dogs gnawing on zipper parts.

water proof pillow insert4. Cuddly, comfortable pillow inserts – My pillow inserts are handmade from 100% unbleached cotton muslin, stuffed with 100% polyester fiber.

5. Waterproof pillow insert option – I wanted to have the option of a waterproof pillow insert to prevent any moisture from saturating the stuffing. I created a plastic sleeve that fits over the pillow and protects the stuffing.  In the event of an accident, all I have to do is remove the pillow insert, launder the cover and replace the insert.  Easy, peasy.

As I was making my first plastic sleeve, I discovered that while the plastic prevents moisture from damaging the pillow, it also crinkles. And in sewing the waterproof sleeves, I discovered that I needed to make holes along the seams with a straight pin to allow air to escape. Even with this, the air needs to be pushed out of the pillow every now and then or else the pillow can behave like a trampoline ;-). I keep the holes to a minimum to maintain the “waterproof” quality of the sleeve.  Honestly, though, it’s worth it to me to put up with a little bit of noise and needing to squish the air out, if it saves me having to replace the pillow inserts.

6.  And finally, I never liked the color/pattern choices of the dogs beds in the stores.  I have been able to find fun prints and colors and have had a great time coming up with the design.

ellie loves her bedSince we added a third dog to our household, our pet related costs have risen.  While we knew this would happen, I feel good knowing that I’ve come up with something that is economical as well as useful.  I’ve made a bed for each of my dogs and have put a few more in my Etsy Shop.

If you or someone you know is shopping for dog beds, consider taking a look at these.

Paws || Walk On – 10.5-10.18

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.

Paws | Week of 10.5-10.11

• attended a memorial service celebrating the life of a dear friend.
• helped to count the offering at church.
• helped a family member with a doctor’s appointment. (I love that I’m available for things like this)
• visited and took care of 4 extra dogs.  I love weeks with lots of dogs.
• finished Woody and Ellie’s dog beds.
• posted a picture everyday for the October Photo-a-day Challenge.
• started my secret project::  Quest46.
• changed my calendar/planner by adding a week-at-a-glance section.
• had a wonderful lunch with friends at the Elephant Bar.  Such good food.
• cleared leaves and debris to get ready to start laying pavers in backyard.
• Finished And Then You Dye – book 16 in the Monica Ferris Needlework Mystery Series.
• finished my brother’s birthday card.
• worked out once this week in addition to daily dog walks.
• started planning a MAJOR reorganization of my craft room.
• took a meal over to a family that just had a baby.

Walk On | Week of 10.12-10.18

• celebrate my brother’s 44th birthday.
• Skype/Knit with a friend in San Diego.
• plan 3 Christmas card designs for upcoming Pinterest Party.
• take Ellie in for a tooth extraction.  Poor baby.
• balance the checkbook and pay bills.
• make dog beds for Woody and Ellie.
• think about projects for an all-day craft day on Saturday.
• return library books.
• work on a book binding class for my friends Girl Scout troop
• work out at least twice this week.
• start laying pavers in the backyard.
• start reading book #17 by Monica Ferris, The Drowning Spool

My favorite quote from the week:  “Don’t be afraid of your fears.  They’re not there to scare you.  They’re there to let you know something is worth it.”  C. Joybell C.

Here’s to facing fears,

Saturday Snippets | October 11, 2014

Welcome to Saturday Snippets.  This is where I share links and odd bits of info from the past week.

MMR App1.  I’ve used the Map My Run App for a while now, but I’ve never signed up for one of the challenges.  Until this week.    Purina Pro Plan is hosting the Run for Rescues.  They want to log one million miles between September 29 and October 28.  When that happens, Purina will contribute a one-time donation of 10,000 meals of Purina Pro Plan to shelter and rescue organizations.  Every dog walk or run that is at least 15 minutes or more counts toward the goal.

captain america2.  Watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier a couple of nights ago.  Really enjoyed it.

And Then You Dye3.  Started the sixteenth book in a series surrounding a needlework shop called Crewel World set in Excelsior, Minnesota.  Just as with the Tea Shop Mysteries, this collection of books deals with the world of needlework, fibers and stitching.  I’m halfway through And Then You Dye and already I’ve learned a significant amount about dyeing fabrics with vegetables.

CaringHeartsLogo-03-600x3884.  I’m going to take part in the Caring Hearts Card Drive hosted by Jennifer McGuire Ink.  Here’s what Jennifer has to say, “The holidays are about family, kindness, and joy. During this time many of the elderly who lives in nursing homes would really feel the loneliness or missing their family. Wouldn’t it be so awesome if we can bring a smile to their face & brighten their holiday season simply by sharing our love of card making? A simple gesture to let them know that they are not forgotten.”

even stitches5.  Maybe it’s because I’m deep into a book all about needlework, but I thought this blog post from Wild Olive about how to keep your embroidery stitches even is brilliant.  Check it out.

Well that’s all the snippets I have for today.  Have a wonderful Saturday,

Quest 46 | A 365-day Journey

On November 24th, I turn 46.  And I know this is quite a ways off – 46 days to be exact.

A couple of months ago I was reading a blog where the author talked about turning 30 and wanting the year following her birthday to be filled with intentional experiences.  So she thought of 30 items that she wanted to accomplish before her 31st birthday.  Now if you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you’ll know I’m a sucker for this type of thing.  I love lists and planning stuff and when you wrap that all up in a nice birthday bow – well, I’m just giddy!

Additionally around this time, I was thinking a lot about purpose and intention in my own life and trying to figure out my next steps.  While I was in England with my grandpa, I read a book called The Happiness of Pursuit by Chris Guillebeau and he talked about pursuing quests and he even defined a quest.

  • A quest has a clear goal and a specific end point.   (Goal: To improve in all areas of my life. I chose 46 items and thought about the purpose for each one.  Ends on November 24, 2015 – 365 days)
  • A quest presents a clear challenge.  (Some of the 46 items are easy to accomplish; others are going to stretch me emotionally and spiritually.)
  • A quest requires sacrifice of some kind.  (To remain true to the items I chose, I may be sacrificing sleep.  Actually I’m not sure what role sacrifice will play, but I know it will.)
  • A quest is often driven by a calling or sense of mission. (I want to quit being someone that says ‘I’ll do that next year’.  I want to be a person of action that has no regrets.)
  • A quest requires a series of small steps and incremental progress toward the goal. (I’ve mapped out each item on a calendar to help alleviate commitment overload.)

Quest46LogoI devoured the book and highly recommend it and decided to put my plan into action on my 46th birthday.  I call it Quest46.

I divided my list of 46 into 9 categories.  I’m crazy for crafts and dogs, but I didn’t want those things to dominate my life for a year.  I wanted to balance my time and energy across the breadth and depth of my life.  The categories I chose are Faith, Health, Home & Yard, Crafts, Marriage, Family & Friends, Dogs, WWMD Blog and Personal.

Over the next 46 days I’m going to share each one of the items on my list.  Then after I start the Quest46 on November 24, 2014, I’ll do weekly updates to share progress and insights.  There’s a part of me that incredibly excited about this and another that is terrified.  I’m mostly terrified because I’m telling everyone about it and I’m afraid of falling flat on my face.  But if I’m really honest, I’m more afraid of not doing this.  Lately I’ve been very aware of the fleeting nature of time.  We only have a finite number of days and I want to make them count year by year.  So here’s to Quest46!

And on that note…. Quest 46, item #1

Faith Category
1.  Memorize Psalm 91.  This Psalm holds a special place in my heart and I want to commit it to memory.  I’m terrible at memorization so this is going to take work, but that’s okay because the truths contained in this Psalm will flow into every aspect of my life.

Chicky Boo Boo and a Hummingbird named “Peeps”

Chicky Boo Boo1 Chicky Boo Boo2 Chicky Boo Boo3Today’s October Photo-a-day prompt is “crafty”.  Now this is a word that makes my brain want to explode!  There are so many pictures I wanted to take for this prompt, but I needed to whittle it down to one.  I looked through my craft room and found a project bag from a couple of years ago with these cute chickens stuffed with rice.  They’re called Chicky Boo Boo’s and you can put them in the freezer and when there’s a need for an ice pack (especially for children) you have a cute chicken ready to cool away the pain.  I really loved the design, and had thought about making one in the shape of a dog and calling it a Puppy Boo Boo.  When I do that I’ll post a picture.  Seeing these guys made me think of birds which triggered the memory of the time I rescued a baby hummingbird.

Peeps 2It was about 8 years ago and I called him Peeps.  I discovered the little tyke one day as I was walking down the stairs with the dogs.  He had been doused with water from the sprinklers and he was alive but not moving. He was tiny – probably an inch tall. I looked to see if I could find his nest but it was no where to be found.  Our trees are pretty tall and it was a miracle he survived the fall and the many cats in our neighborhood. I quickly hustled the dogs back upstairs and went to find a shoebox.

Peeps4After I settled him in the box I went to find an eye dropper. I knew enough that he needed sugar water but I didn’t know in what quantity.  A few Google searches later, I learned the ratio of water to sugar as well as the fact that the mama hummingbirds looked for spiders and aphids to feed their young.  Thankfully (or not, depending on your outlook) I had lots of aphids on our roses and the spiders were numerous that summer.  Every morning I would go out to the yard in search of “breakfast”, mush it up, mix it in with the sugar water and feed it to Peeps with the eye dropper.  I named him Peeps because of the sound he made when he was hungry.  And he  was hungry about every 45 minutes!

Peeps 1Throughout this amazing adventure, my goal was to get him strong and big enough to release.  He didn’t have his flight feathers yet so I was able to keep him in the box.  He slept through the night, but was peeping away in the morning anxious for breakfast #1 of the day.  I worked at our church at the time, so I found a plastic storage bin, drilled some holes in the top and fit it into a carrier bag.  He sat on my shoulder while I worked, but that lasted only a few days until his feathers started to grow. I borrowed the butterfly net from our preschool and let him fly around so he could practice flying and gain strength.  At home we built him a similar enclosure where he could practice flying to his hearts content.  Before I knew it (2 weeks to be exact) he was a proper hummingbird with the wings and beak to boot.

The day came when I had to let him go.  I must say, although I knew I had to, I was sorry to see him go.  I’d like to report that he comes by to visit every now and then, but he doesn’t.  I released him and he took off and never looked back.

I found this very short video of him.  It was definitely an experience I’ll never forget.

Grace

I’m okay with “seeing the world anew” as long as that doesn’t affect our walks.  Oh, and I’m also excited about the new bed and collar.

Saturday Snippets | October 4, 2014

Welcome to Saturday Snippets.  This is where I share links and odd bits of info from the past week.

IMG_06751.  Discovered a new, free app called Way of Life for the iPhone.  If you have a bad habit you want to break or a good one you want to start, this app can help.  It shows your progress in a color-coded format and even makes charts.

IMG_06742.  Currently really enjoying a series called Last IMG_0673Tango in Halifax.  Takes place in Halifax, England and features an actress called Sarah Lancashire, who also stars in Happy Valley – an English cop drama.  I love both series, but Happy Valley is my favorite.

IMG_06723.  Almost to the end of the last available book in the Tea Shop Mysteries by Laura Childs.  Apparently there’s another to be released in March, 2015.  I love mysteries and series especially if those series teach me about a new area of life.  This series takes place in South Carolina where Theodosia Browning owns a tea shop.  Each book has recipes from the tea shop’s menu in the back.

4.  Today is World Card Making Day.  Which reminds me – I need to make some cards.  In the meantime, here’s a card making video tutorial.

IMG_06715.  Loving reading Waiting on God by Andrew Murray with my husband.  It’s a 31-day devotional and each day begins with a biblical quote which includes the phrase, “Wait on the Lord.”

Well that’s all the snippets I have for today.  Have a wonderful Saturday,  Grace

National Walk Your Dog Week – October 1-7

IMG_0014According to NationalWalkYourDog.com, “National Walk Your Dog Week was founded in 2010 by Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate Colleen Paige, to bring awareness to the ever increasing problem of canine behavior issues and canine obesity in America. Walk Your Dog Week aims to improve the health and well being of America’s dogs and sends the message to unchain your dogs!”

In honor of this week, I thought I’d make a collar for Mindy.  I have been thinking about making collars for all three dogs for a while now.  Woody and Ellie are wearing the same collars I bought for them 8 years ago.  That’s a testament to the durability of the collars, but they’re both starting to look a little worn.  I learned a lot about dog collars when we adopted Ellie.  I think we went through 6 collars before I found one she couldn’t remove and chew in half.  The last one I bought for her had a lifetime warranty, and wouldn’t you know that’s the one that worked out and she’s still wearing it today.IMG_0654IMG_0655

I found this tutorial on Pinterest and wanted to see if I could make Mindy a customized collar.  I chose a colorful piece of fabric that would stand out against her black coat  The tutorial is very well written and she has lots of helpful photos.  But even with that, it took me a couple tries to get it just right.  I learned more about my sewing machine than I ever thought possible and about being very, very patient.  3 hours later it was finished.  Yea!!  IMG_0661IMG_0660IMG_0659My hope is that the next two won’t take as long.

As you know I love walking my dogs or any dog for that matter.  Even though we take the same route every day, the dogs treat it as an adventure every time.  They know when I’m getting ready to go – I put on my “woof” ball cap and lace up my shoes and we’re ready to put on leashes.  They possess the same level of excitement every day (pure joy) – I think they have a lot to teach me about finding joy in the every day.

About a year ago, we were almost home from a walk when a freak thunderstorm and lighting struck.  Ellie, who is deathly afraid of loud noises, decided we need to run home.  Since that day, I’ve only been able to get her out on a walk a handful of times.  We play ball in the backyard for exercise, but she’s been missing out on her daily walks.  We discovered recently, though, that she will go on a walk if Mike comes along.  So we’ve been going most nights around 7:30p.  Ellie has to be lead dog, so Mike takes her and I follow with Woody and Mindy.  It’s really good to see Ellie enjoying the walks again and Mindy and Woody are high-fiving over the fact that they sometimes get TWO walks a day.

I love that the collar worked out because now I can make some for Christmas and Valentine’s and 4th of July and …

Until next time,
Grace

I love my new collar, mom, and my new bed, although, Ellie keeps stealing my bed.  Maybe she needs her own.  Soon.

Me and Da – 1969

10653739_10203542542336965_6433671967966681021_n

Me and Da – 2014

I’ve always been a person that like to keep bits and pieces of ephemera from every day life – as a memory.  And on this past trip to England, I discovered that my grandmother was too.  While sorting through the cupboards and drawers of my grandpa’s house, we found photos, letters, school records, birth and death announcements and clippings of hair.  I felt like I was stepping back in time to when my mom was a child and my grandparents were young adults. I found pictures of my brothers and I that I’d never seen in our family albums, as well as, letters my mom wrote to her mom about life raising three kids.  We found photos of my grandparents on their holidays in Spain and Italy.  I had forgotten how much they traveled.

IMG_0628

My mom and I sitting on a sand dune. I was apparently drinking tea.

A few months ago, before my trip, Mike and I cleaned out a storage area we have above our garage and I found a couple of boxes that I hadn’t seen in years, maybe decades.  They contained all the letters Mike and I wrote to each other while we were dating and he was away at college.  There were also ticket stubs from movies we saw, postcards, clippings of Mike’s hair (I must get that from my grandma) and the blue plastic ring he gave me before he left for college.  (That’s a story for another day)

IMG_0623IMG_0624The left picture is the letters Mike sent to me and the right picture is the letters I sent to Mike.  I have an album picked out and will start putting these in date order.  When I’m finished I hope to have a sort of story book of the years before we were married.

We started to read through some of the letters and spent an evening laughing our heads off at how much we had changed and at how much we were still the same.  I will say we were very emotional at times in the letters, albeit dramatic, but we were young and in love and separated by 400 miles.  We wrote consistently for 4 years and I’m grateful that I kept the letters because it documents us at the beginning of our relationship.  We called each other every now and then, but long distance phone calls in 1984-1988 weren’t cheap so we did a lot of letter writing.

Since returning from England I’ve been on a mission to streamline our record keeping as well as my memory keeping.  I keep a weekly memory album called Project Life and try to do a good job of capturing the ins and outs of our daily lives.  I’m going to take my treasure trove of letters, put them in chronological order (we kept all the envelopes with the date stamp) and create a running dialog of our life back then.  This way I can store the album on a bookshelf that is easier to get to than the storage loft.  Documenting our lives is something I’ve always enjoyed doing, but by looking through the photos and reading the letters, I am reminded of how much I have to be thankful for.

We all have rich histories and stories to be shared.  How are you capturing/documenting your memories?

Grace

Since you’re into this documenting thing at the moment, I’d like to request that a few pictures of me be destroyed.  Particularly any pictures involving me wearing stuff on my head.
