Slimming down my wardrobe

While I’m the last person on the planet that leads a minimalist lifestyle, I’m completely enamored with people who are able to live abundant lives with less.  There are people who are able to live in tiny homes and when I say tiny, I mean 100 square feet or less.  This video shows you what I’m talking about.

While I don’t see Mike and I living in a tiny house (too many dogs), I do see myself learning to live with less.  In my heart of hearts I know that’s the way to go, but I can’t bring myself to part with my stuff yet.  I must say I’m much better at using what I have and very grateful for all I have, but let’s be honest, most of us swim in excess most of the time.

This is a topic I’ve written about before and while I have improved in some areas, I find myself returning to old habits.  Lately, though, I feel incredibly frustrated and tired when all I want to do is find the tape measure (and we have 5), but for some unknown reason it’s nowhere to be found.  I know my problem is a combination of organization issues and too much stuff.

While there are several areas I need to work on, one I’m particularly motivated to work on is my clothing.  I’m not sure why, but I’m not asking why, I’m just running with it. 😉  I became aware of Project333 through Courtney Carver’s blog, Be More With LessProject 333 is a minimalist fashion challenge that invites you to dress with 33 items or less for 3 months.  There are basic rules (and I like rules):

“The Basics

  • When: Every three months (It’s never too late to start so join in anytime!)
  • What: 33 items including clothing, accessories, jewelry, outerwear and shoes.
  • What not: these items are not counted as part of the 33 items – wedding ring or another sentimental piece of jewelry that you never take off, underwear, sleep wear, in-home lounge wear,  and workout clothing (you can only wear your workout clothing to workout)
  • How: Choose your 33 items, box up the remainder of your fashion statement, seal it with tape and put it out of sight.
  • What else: consider that you are creating a wardrobe that you can live, work and play in for three months. Remember that this is not a project in suffering. If your clothes don’t fit or are in poor condition, replace them.” — Project333

Not only am I looking forward to room in my closet, but not having to waste time deciding what to wear everyday.  I’ve made my list of 33 items and surprisingly most of what I wear on a regular basis in on that list.  I’ll report back in 3 months with my experience and observations.

Is there an area of your life that you’re trying to streamline and simplify?

Grace

We’re thinking that tiny houses would mean tiny dogs and we’re not tiny.  So that idea’s out!

Paws || Walk On – 11.30 – 12.13

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.

Passing the crafting baton to the next generation

I’ve always love crafting, as you know, but what I love even more is teaching others how to discover their love for crafting.  I’ve had the privilege of teaching knitting, sewing and paper crafting to people of all ages.  There are three aspects of teaching that bring me the greatest joy.

1.  When the light bulb goes on, the moment when they ‘get it’ and they start to embrace the craft for themselves.  It’s like opening a door to their creativity and imagination.

2.  When I can dispel the ‘difficulty’ of a craft. Reveal the secret that makes it look difficult when in reality it’s really easy.

3.  The imagination and creativity of each individual person from children to adults.  I love presenting the bones of a project and then seeing what each person creates out of their own imagination.

This past summer I was able to spend a few Friday’s with my 10-year-old niece working on crafts and showing her some paper crafting techniques.  She’s learned a lot of crafts at school, but we’ve worked on a few projects as well.  Not only is it a blast showing her how to do these things, it’s fun that she’s excited about the process.

0194316f73b77ef36b0997de0ba857f39737ed18ec_00001For my birthday, she gave me a card that she designed and made herself.  I was so touched and impressed with her craftsmanship; she used techniques I hadn’t taught her.  The student had become the teacher!  She inspires me because she’s always telling how she goes on YouTube to learn all this stuff.  Often we’ll spend a Friday afternoon, ‘watching tutorials’ on YouTube at her request.  It’s amazing what you can learn how to do.  For example, making lip gloss with crayons.  Here we are showing off our work.

These flowers were originally white. She inked them to change the color. Brilliant!

She rolled paper to achieve the frame and used her decorative scissors to create the leaves. So clever!

Cards for 2015 Instagram

Seeing the birthday card she made for my birthday cemented my idea for the 31 Cards in January.  It reminded me how much I enjoyed teaching as well as making cards myself.  Hopefully I’ll inspire others to handcraft cards for their family and friends and kindle the flame of creativity.

Getting excited for the new Year,

Grace

Hey we love it when you give us the ‘bones’ of a project, although, we don’t create much.  We just chew.

Quest46 has started

I turned 46 on November 24th, exactly 8 days ago.  And Quest46 began on that day.  If you’re new to my blog, Quest46 is a group of 46 goals I gave myself for the next 365 days (or 357 as of today).  You can read about it here.

There was so much excitement leading up to the actual start day that the last 8 days have just slipped by.  In an effort not to let the next 357 ‘just slip by’, I’ve assigned flexible start dates to all my activities and put those dates on my calendar.  Prior to starting this project, I did map out all the activities on a master calendar, but because judging how long things take is not one of my strong suits, I’ll be making adjustments along the way.

I’ve written the entire list along with current progress. I call this accountability. 😉

1. Memorize Psalm 91.  Copied the chapter to index cards.  Made several sets and put them in various rooms of the house as well as my purse and jacket pockets.
2. Lose the rest of my weight and increase my fitness.  Working on increasing mileage of daily walks and watching portions.
3. Find and implement new ways to honor Mike daily.  I’m learning that when I’m too focused on my stuff, this one goes by the wayside.  I’m making sure I’m finished with all my work by 5pm every night so I can focus on him.
4. Make albums for each dog.  Will start this in the new year.
5. Crochet a Ripple Blanket.  Will start in the new year.
6. Plant a vegetable garden.  Sometime in spring.
7. Journal 52.  Want to do this on Friday’s.  Already 1 week behind.  Will play catchup this week.
8. Read 24 new books.  Have chosen 15 of the 24.  Here’s the 15:  The God Ask, Manage Your Day to Day, Handmade Market Place, Lore of Running, Outlander #1, The Pilgrim’s Progress, Yarn to Go, Jock of the Bushveld, Dear Mr. Knightly, How to be the Leader of the Pack, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals, Lady Susan, The Scent of Water: Grace for Every Kind of Broken, White Fang
9. Make a scarf for Margaret.  Found the pattern, now just need the wool.
10. Make birthday cards for family and friends.  Finished November, now working on December.
11. Send two “thinking of you gifts” every month.  Gift #1 goes out next week.
12. Complete 6 online classes.  First one scheduled for January 14, 2015.
13. Start a 5 year – daily, one-line journal.  Started and love it.
14. Learn how to make paper.  Next year sometime.
15. Make Christmas stockings.  Hopefully this Saturday, December 6, 2014.
16. Learn 12 new recipes.  #1 complete.  Pumpkin Pie (low carb)
17. Learn how to weave.  Next year sometime.
18. Record 12 card making video tutorials.  Start this in the new year.
19. Make a smaller soap box and make different scented soaps every month.  Need to make a batch soon.  We’re almost out.  Mike has requested Cinnamon Spice.
20. Paint Kitchen Cabinets.  Looking to do this in June, 2015.
21. Learn how to dye with natural ingredients.  Waiting for springtime.017a5b9117365ce5dfbc0af39c19ec5c0f1875eea3
01260f422baf10ab4a84d97dc160814071a508a25b22. Work 52 items off “My Todo’s” Board on Pinterest. #1 complete.  I made paper beads using old books, bead cores and Utee Ultra Thick Embossing Resin.  Blog post to follow.
23. Make mini-albums of dogs for Christmas presents.  I’ve modified this to framing a picture of each dog.  If I was doing this for next Christmas I might have enough time, but not with Christmas 23 days away.
24. Make Mike a Dr. Who Quilt.  Starting in March, 2015.
25. Start a fairy garden.  Going to wait for spring.
26. Paint patio furniture.  Scheduled for July, 2015.
27. Plant a cutting garden.  Spring, 2015.
28. Make dog biscuit gift bags for Christmas.  A wonderful friend sent me a recipe book full of dog biscuit recipes.  Scheduled for next week.
29. Complete all the achievements of the 7 Minute Workout.  Need to start this.
30. Beat my time in the Urban Cow Half Marathon.  Increasing my walking mileage then beginning running training after the first of the year.
31. Finish Central Park Hoodie.  Step 1:  Find where I put this project.  I’m in the process of doing that.
32. Read through the Bible. 1 chapter per day.  Starting this on January 1, 2015 with Mike.  Until then, I’m reading through the Psalms.
33. Make birds for wall tree.  Will start after the first of the year and the Christmas decorations are down.
34. Declutter and decorate Master Bedroom.  Waiting for the new year.
35. Make Cloth Art Journal.  Scheduled for the next couple of weeks.
36. Learn to knit socks.  Found the pattern and the class.  Will wait until Central Park Hoodie is finished (31).
37. Work on Project Life every week.  Trying to carve out Sunday afternoons for this.  Keeping track of journaling throughout the week.
38. Transcribe Da’s tapes.  In the new year.
39. Make dog beds.  Finished 1 last week.  Want to complete 5 this week.
40. Pray for my nieces and nephews.  Everyday.  I’m really enjoying this.
41. Add a new item every month to Etsy shop to build variety and inventory.  Dreaming up what the next item will be.  Look for it by the end of December.
42. Put together a team for the local SPCA Doggie Dash in June.  Will begin in January, 2015.
43. Photo-a-day using the Collect App.  Love this app.  Here’s November, 2014.01656de600f5e8689d705912bbd13984117bdc0384
44. Read Pride and Prejudice.  Will begin this in the new year.
45. Knit 1 square per week for Knit-a-square. Halfway finished with last week’s square.  Will catch up this week.  Pictures to come.
46. Be a better blogger and blog-reader. Post consistently. Comment regularly.  Work on this everyday.

There are moments when I look at this list and get very excited.  There are other moments when I start to hyperventilate.  Then I remind myself I have a whole year and it’s only been 8 days.

Until tomorrow,
Grace

Don’t hyperventilate mom.  Remember we’re all in this together.  Well — you’re doing all the work, but we’re here to watch you work and walk with you when you need to get some fresh air.  No worries.

Making Decisions

I don’t know about you, but I tend to mull over decisions.  I don’t arrive at them quickly or easily.  I weigh all my options, chew on ideas, make pro and con lists, try to think about the situation from different angles, sometimes wait for the decision to be made for me 😉 and then inevitably I decide.  As you can imagine, it’s not one of my favorite things to do.  I think I’m afraid that I’m going to overlook some nuance of the situation or activity, hurt someone’s feelings, mess up someone’s plans, regret my decision (so I don’t make one) or any number of other excuses.

My decision to NOT do my 31 Days of Cards blog post series in December was one of those decisions.  I plan to do it in January and am really looking forward to it, but more about that in a minute.

It started last Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving) when the flicker of doubt started to creep into my mind about whether doing a series in December was a good idea.  I was already prepared with daily post ideas, supplies were well stocked, I was motivated because I’ve been in a crafting blitz lately, but still, I was starting to feel the pressure of too many activities threatening to overwhelm and rob my holiday of joy.

Initially I ignored the feelings of overwhelm and told myself that once the 30 Days of Christmas Ornaments was finished, I could breathe a little easier.  THEN I sat down and wrote out all the projects I have committed to between now and December 21st.  Yikes!!!  But still, I told myself, if I just kept focused and worked diligently I could still do it.  Keep in mind I don’t usually factor in mishaps (it’s a major flaw) and I’m a fairly poor judge of how long things will take and my punishing schedule wasn’t allowing any wiggle room.  What could possibly go wrong????

This past month (November) has been an awesome time both in my life and on my blog.  In some ways I don’t want the momentum to stop on my blog, but in reality it will ALL stop if I don’t take the month of December to decompress, enjoy the season and give myself the space to finish the commitments I’ve already made.

Cards for 2015 InstagramSo with that decision made, here’s my plan for the 31 Days of Cards blog series that will start January 1st.  I’ve chosen 31 types of cards: birthday, anniversary, celebration, baby, wedding, thank you, sympathy, new home, etc. and 31 different paper crafting techniques to highlight.  Each day I will post a card and the steps I used to make it along with the supplies I used.  Additionally, each day I will have a giveaway for each card and a Card Grand Giveaway on February 1,2015 for all 31 cards.  If you’re looking to stockpile your greeting card stash for this next year, enter to win.

I’m starting off December by watching White Christmas, beginning my December Daily album, working on my Christmas projects (I’ll be blogging about them ;-)) and my Quest46 activities.  And looking forward to a productive new year mostly because I didn’t destroy myself this month.

How do you plan to spend December?

Grace

Mom, we’re relieved  you’ve made this decision.  Now you’ll have all the time in the world to making our stockings and decorate our tree.  And we were wondering about a dog biscuit advent calendar??  But only if you have time.

Christmas Movie List

In 2012, I watched 25 Christmas movies, one every night of December starting on December 1st.  I would have repeated the tradition in 2013, but my mom and I spent Christmas in England taking care of my grandpa that year and we weren’t home until January, 2014.  So I’m ready to revive the tradition with 25 Christmas movies for 2014.  Here’s my list (in no particular order).

christmas movie list

All these movies are either about Christmas or take place at Christmas with the exception of two – Babette’s Feast and I Remember Mama.  For me, Babette’s Feast a wonderful reminder of the true spirit of the season. Out of great love for a group of people who are oblivious to her true talent, Babette sacrifices all she has to prepare for them a celebration dinner served only at the finest French restaurants. And I Remember Mama is a sentimental, wonderful story about family and the sacrificial love of a mom for her children – both movies remind me of how God loves us. You’ll need several boxes of Kleenex.

This is also a time for me to watch and re-watch dog-related Christmas movies.  Prior to starting this month of movies, I always stock up on boxes of Kleenex and I recommend you do as well.

Obviously this list is a selection of my own personal favorites (and my own personal sentiments and quirks).  I’d love to hear about movies you watch that aren’t on my list.

Grace

We’re ready to start watching movies, especially the dog ones.

Paws || Walk On – 11.23 – 12.6
