National Scrapbook Day | Layout #2 – Teddy

Big Picture Classes

20140503-154913.jpgLayout #2 is called “Teddy”.

I started with a 12X12 piece of textured brown cardstock.  Once again I used my Dylusion inks (white linen) to splatter diagonally across the page.  From there I searched for brown and red papers and embellishments along with my favorite paw-themed washi tape.  I outlined the papers and wrote my journaling with my black Zig writer.

The journaling says: My mom and I see Teddy when we visit Da in England.  Teddy is the most gentle dog with eyes and fur the color of Cadbury chocolate.  He is adorable wherever he goes and brings great joy to many.

National Scrapbook Day | Layout #1 – Lilly

Big Picture Classes20140503-135601.jpg

It should be no surprise that my layouts today will feature dogs. I’m not sure how many I will complete but I’m going to give it the old college try. And I’m posting everything using my iPhone today. I forgot that I told my hubby he could use my laptop for an event today. Silly me.

On this layout I sprayed a floral stencil with a variety of green Dylusion sprays before backing the photo with three different pattern papers. I had fun searching for all my green papers and letter stickers. I outlined the patterned paper and write the journaling with my black zig writer. I embellished with a selection of stickers, lace and puffy gel dots. I also found a mini craft bag with the word “sweet” in which I popped a white tag with the word “Lilly” stuck on.

The journaling says: Lilly is the sweetest girl with the most beautiful face. She loves to walk and play, but mostly she loves to cuddle. She also has the softest, whitest fur of any dog I’ve ever known. We love when she comes to visit us.
Here are some close ups.

Process Video | New Baby Card

I recently took part in a Photo Inspiration Challenge hosted by Mama Elephant, a paper crafting blog I follow, for the month of April.  I wrote about how I made this card.

confetti crush challengeI’ve taken part in another challenge today, this time through Curtain Call Inspiration Challenge Blog and this one is called Confetti Crush.  Using the photo on the left, I created a card for a new baby.  Inspired by the confetti {which makes me think of celebrating}, I corralled all my pink papers, found a cute sentiment stamp from Reverse Confetti ‘Lots to Say’ stamp set and made a card along with a process video to show you how I did it.

Here’s the finished card.

I remain affectionately yours.

I remain affectionately yours.  I have always thought that is one of the best ways to end a letter or a note.  While the usual Love is fine to use, I’m always on the hunt for better ways to accurately convey the depth of my feelings for the person I’m writing to.  Not that writing letters is something I do very often.  I do, however, enjoy sending cards {usually hand crafted} for different occasions.

IMG_3654I had been out of practice until February, when I took part in a card swap for Valentine’s Day hosted by Jill at Create.Craft.Love.com.  Not only was it great fun to make the cards, but everyday I went to the post box with silly excitement to see what surprises were there.

IMG_3653This was my contribution.  I loved playing with all my pink and red washi tape and adding the splash of gold embossing for the sentiment.

This little venture has re-ignited my love for hand crafted cards {I used to make cards all the time} as well as wanting to bless others with the silly excitement of receiving something fun in the mail. I shared a couple of cards in the I do love a challenge and the St. Patrick’s Day Card blog posts.  Even today, with texting and email as the primary methods of communication, there’s nothing like opening your mail box and seeing an envelope addressed to you.

I remain affectionately yours,

Grace

IMG_0641Hey mom.  You know we’re “affectionately yours”, but it really helps when you have treats.  Just saying.

5 Things I’m loving right now.

There are 5 things right now that are making me weirdly happy.  They are all things that are either helping me to be more efficient, helping me to get things done or just making me feel good.

1.  Groove book | Groovebook is an app that prints up to 100 of your phone photos and creates a photobook (4.5″ X6.5″) that is mailed to you monthly.  The photos are printed on glossy photo paper and perforated much like a postcard collection book.  And the best part:  You get all this for $2.99 per month including shipping.  I received my first Groovebook a couple of days ago and just love it.

IMG_4604 IMG_4602 IMG_4601IMG_4600I had been looking for an inexpensive photo processing service for my Project Life and Scrapbooking and it doesn’t get better than this.  The photo paper is a tad thinner than photo paper that you’d get through Walmart or CVS, but for my applications it’s a perfect fit.  And you can’t beat the price.  Check out Groovebook.com for more info.

2.  Collect app | Keeping with the topic of phone photography, I’m also in love with the Collect App – designed so that collecting your photos every day is a joy not a chore.  I use it to capture a photo a day plus help me to remember significant moments in every week.  At the end of the month, I download the month of photos in a nifty calendar format and pop it into my Project Life album.

IMG_4098Here are some of the features:

  • See all your photos for every month in a calendar display.
  • Not only add a caption but also add detailed notes to each photo.
  • Share each day & each month via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and email.
  • The card format is perfect for printing when exported from the app. ( a great combo with Groovebook.)
  • Have a different calendar for each part of your life.
  • Collect as many photos as you want with the option for just one per day.
  • Daily alert so you don’t miss a day in your “photo a day” quest. (Really handy)

3.  My craft table/island | I have a love/hate relationship with my craft room.  I had spent several weeks organizing and decluttering and finally reached the place where I have a spot for everything.  I was really pleased but also faced with a gaping hole of unused space in the middle of my room (all my storage and work area goes around the perimeter of the room).  My solution:  A 3’X2′ craft table/island block in the middle of the room.  IMG_4194 IMG_4133 IMG_4135

I bought the 6 of the ClosetMaid 3-shelf stackable organizer from Amazon and set them up in a 3X2 configuration.  We had an extra piece of 3X2 white laminate that I just conveniently placed on top.  I also have a 3X2 self-healing quilt mat that fits quite nicely on top.  And the best part – it’s the perfect height.  I’m 4’10”, so finding a unit at the right height was tricky.  And Ellie was a an excellent helper that day.

Sheets4.  New sheets | This may seem odd, but I loovvee our new sheets.  When we got married (25 years ago), we were given about 10 sets of sheets.  I know that seems like a lot, but we really haven’t had to buy sheets in quite a long time – until now.  I was a little taken aback by the price of queen sized sheets, but Kohl’s was having a sale and these babies arrived a week ago.  I know the thread count is low, but for us they’re luxurious.  We may splurge at Christmas and get another set.

IMG_43415.  Youth Dew | I’ve only used 4 perfumes in my life.  I started with Love’s Baby Soft as a teenager, switched to Royal Secret in my early 20’s (I can’t find it anymore), found Byzance by Rochas in my 30’s (they don’t make it anymore) and finally landed with Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew.  I do love Youth Dew, but it’s pricey.  Recently, though, a very helpful Estee Lauder rep mentioned that I could buy the bath oil for $40 and have it last 4 times as long.  I thought that was a brilliant idea and along with the free gift with $35 purchase made me feel relatively frugal.  I bought this bottle on March 8th and use it everyday.  As you can see this will last a while.

Is there anything you’re really appreciating at the moment?

Grace

1. my walks

How do I love thee, burlap? Let me count the ways.

My love affair with burlap began a few months ago.  I offered to make wedding invitations for a friend who was getting married and when I asked about her colors, she mentioned that she loved deep purple, orange and the look of burlap. I also helped another friend make the table decorations which included mason jars, ribbon, lace, buttons and burlap. And finally, we made soap wrapped in burlap for the wedding favors.

I was first introduced to burlap a couple of years ago when I made a pair of ring pillows for a wedding.  I had no idea that burlap came in colors or stamped with images.  Burlap on it’s own isn’t too attractive, but when combined with lace or ribbon or cut into shapes it adds a rustic charm to any project.  So off I went to buy a whole bolt – 10 yards.

IMG_3673Invitations:  I used the burlap for the belly band of the invitation and as an accent flower.

I used the Sizzix Bigz Die –  Tattered Florals by Tim Holtz to cut the flower pieces out of scrapbook paper, cardstock and burlap.

Table Runners: IMG_4211I made table runners using the burlap and lace. Burlap is surprisingly easy to sew on.  I cut 12″ X 24″ pieces of burlap and then attached pieces of lace to each end.  They looked stunning against the white tablecloths.

IMG_4017IMG_4020IMG_4210Center Pieces:  The centerpieces consisted of 3 mason jars, one large, one medium and one small.  I found orange burlap with sparkles (so pretty) and cut strips to go around each jar.  We then added ribbon and a button to cover the seam where the ribbon met.  We filled the jar with daisies and baby’s breath.  The combination of the three staggered sizes against the burlap was beautiful.

IMG_4119Wedding Favors:  And finally the wedding favors.  My friend wanted to give handmade soap to her guests wrapped in burlap.  I used a recipe I found in The Natural Soap Book by Susan Miller Cavitch.  I highly recommend this book for first time soap makers and seasoned professionals.  I bought all my soap supplies from Brambleberry.com and used the Spiced Mahogany scent.  Everything smelled sooooo good!  I found wooden hearts, stamped their initials and then an army of friends hot glued them to a wrap of ribbon and burlap.  The overall affect was charming and very well received.

I will definitely be using burlap in future projects.

Grace

IMG_3648Hey who’s this burlap person?  And why do you love them.  It should say, “How do I love thee, Woody and Ellie? Let me count the ways.”

I do love a challenge

I love being able to see if I can do something that I previously thought was impossible.  I never thought I could complete a marathon, but I’ve done it twice.  I certainly never thought I could eliminate sugar from my diet and live, but I did and not only did I survive, but I’m thriving.  In both these cases, I didn’t just wake up one day and achieve those results.  It took a daily commitment of making good choices and over time I was able to reach my goals.

Today, I’m talking about a different kind of challenge.  This is a creative challenge.  I follow many paper crafting blogs (and you know I love blogs) and one in particular, Mama Elephant, posted a Photo Inspiration Challenge for the month of April.

ME 2104-04The challenge is to use the inspiration of this photo along with a Mama Elephant stamp to create a card.

I was drawn to the colors in the photo, particularly the blue/green.  My first creation (you can enter as many times as you want until May 5th) began with the blue/green color.  I chose a mini craft bag with a blue/green background to stamp my sentiment, “just wanted to say thank you“, from the Many Thanks stamp set.  I found a sage green mini chevron card to place in the craft bag and also stamped “I’m so grateful” from that same set.  All my stamping was done with Versamark ink and white embossed.  From there I chose a pink chevron cardstock to highlight the pink in the roses.  The bold pink against the soft blue/green is a striking color combination.  I stitched the pink chevron print to the sage card base, glued the craft bag to the pink chevron and put the sage mini chevron card into the bag.  To finish off the card, I found an oval label which I placed on the front of the bag and placed a heart brad on top of that.

IMG_4160

IMG_4161This isn’t the card I envisioned when I first looked at the inspiration photo, but I’m delighted with the results.

Yummy Knitted Dish Cloths

As I’ve mentioned before, I love blogs.  I’m fascinated by the creativity of others and love to be inspired by their thoughts and ideas.  Every morning I take time while I’m drinking my coffee to browse through the 100’s of blogs I follow.

Every now and then, a sentence will jumpfirsttakecloths11 out at me or a picture will just grab my attention.  This happened the other day.  It was a picture of a stack of cotton dish cloths with a couple of handmade bars of soap on top.  The combination of colors and handmade soap made my heart blip a bit.  I’m a sucker for handmade soap.  I clicked through and discovered it was a post from Simply Notable and pattern for a knitted dish cloth in the shape of a scalloped star.

dishclothsI was hooked.  First, I love cotton dish cloths.  Second, I love cotton yarn.  Third, I love knitting.  So I printed the pattern, found my needles and chose a cheery colorway of green, yellow, white and blue.IMG_4009

The pattern was straight forward, but it used a technique called “short rows”.  I’d never used that technique so I hopped over to YouTube to my favorite knitting teacher, Staci at VeryPink.com and in a matter of minutes was knitting “short rows”.  Within a few hours, I had a scalloped star-shaped dish cloth which will now be my dish cloth of choice.

IMG_4010IMG_4011I’ve made several square cloths over the years and use them for cleaning my home and myself.  They’re extremely durable and stand up to household cleaning, but are gentle enough to wash my face.  They are super easy to just throw in the wash when they’re dirty.  And the cheery colors just make me happy.  They’re a great project for beginners and I’ve taught many people to knit by starting with a dish cloth.

Until next time,
Grace

IMG_3787Hey mom, I might need a wash cloth after I’m done playing.  Just something to consider.

St. Patrick’s Day card | Process Video

As you may have gathered from several of my blog posts, I really like crafts.  It all started with the sewing cards my mom gave me when I was 4.  From there I progressed to crochet and have never looked back.  Since then I’ve spent many years learning all kinds of ways to create cute stuff.  I’ve also discovered that I love to teach and show others as well.

IMG_3953I particularly enjoy making greeting cards and I’ve included video instructions in this post for this really simple card that can IMG_3952be used for any occasion, but with St. Patrick’s Day around the corner and inspired by the color green, I created this gem.  Initially I was going to make shamrocks with the hearts, but that idea worked better in my head than in real life.  I used a technique involving washi tape and punches.  That’s the creative process for ya!

This is hopefully the first of many process videos.  I hope you enjoy it and are inspired to try this technique yourself. I’ve included a list of the supplies I used below the video and feel free to comment or email me if you have any questions.

I would like to wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

I tried to tell mom that I didn’t need the silly shamrocks but she insisted.
