Saturday Snippets | January 10, 2015

Welcome to Saturday Snippets.  This is where I share links and odd bits of info from the past week.

1. Do you have grit?

2.  Now this is a hotel that I want to visit.

“If you miss your dogs while on vacation, you’ll love the Aloft hotel in Asheville, North Carolina–but you may need to make room for an extra passenger on the way home! In July, the lodging chain’s downtown location teamed up with Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue to host a dog until a forever home could be found.”

scout_04. It was just a matter of time before smartphone technology reached the canine world.  This week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Motorola unveiled the Scout 5000, a collar which is being billed as a smartphone for dogs.   Apparently it gives you the ability to see what your dog is doing when you’re not home as well as speak to your dog.  I think that would completely freak my three out.

5. Knit Picks sells yarnMesmeric Cardigan, patterns and knitting supplies and is one of my favorite companies.  You can imagine my glee when the latest catalog arrived on Wednesday with this picture of the front.  I’m adding this project to my Quest47 list.  It’s a Fair Isle design that will definitely challenge my knitting skills.

Well that’s all the snippets I have for today.  Have a wonderful Saturday,

Grace

Ellie

Okay two things:

1.  Not crazy about the collar.

2.  Not crazy about you visiting that hotel with the adoptable dogs.  We’re at our max!

I hope you enjoy your card.

Card #9 –  Congratulations card

I started by assembling all my supplies.

Card 9 Supply LayoutToday was one of those days where this card seemed like it just didn’t want to made.  From the very start, I ran into one issue after another.  I almost scrapped it (and not the good scrap), but decided to keep going because I didn’t have any backup plans for today.

I used white cardstock (5 1/2″ X 8 1/2″) for my base, sage cardstock (5 1/4″ X 4″) for the frame and watercolor paper (5 1/4″ X 4″) for the design.

Time for paint brushespainters tapeRandomly applying inkAfter the ink has dryed

I started by prepping the watercolor paper.  I taped the paper to a board using painters tape.  I then covered the whole piece of paper with plain water.  I wanted a haphazard look so I took my Distress Inks and just randomly applied the ink to the paper.  Then I took a big broad brush and started applying more water until I achieved the look I wanted.  I used my heat gun to dry the paper (to speed the process up).

Watercolor paper rippedThis is when things started to go wrong.  I began to remove the painters tape and the watercolor paper ripped on one side.  After a small tantrum, I regrouped and decided to keep the background piece, just cut off the ripped section.

I set the background aside and starting dry embossing the cardstock frame using an embossing folder.  I chose a folder with small polka dots.  Using my Big Shot machine, I placed the cardstock inside the embossing folder and ran it through.

Tapping off the excess epNow it was time to prepare the sentiment.  The sentiment ‘congratulations’ was stamped onto a banner.  I stamped the banner using Versamark ink and embossed with silver embossing powder.  I then stamped the sentiment on the banner.  This stamp kit came with a matching die-cut.  This is where the 2nd problem showed up.  The die-cut is supposed to leave a thin edge, but that’s only if you line up the die-cut properly.  I thought I did, but when I removed the die-cut the edging was skewed.  Instead of scrapping the banner, I just used my scissors to remove the edging.  I need to spend more time practicing using these die cuts.

Stenciling with VersamarkCard 9 3As much as I liked the watercolor background, the piece was a little flat.  I stenciled stars with Versamark and a holographic embossing powder.  This made the difference.

I used my tape runner to attach the watercolor paper to the cardstock frame then used foam adhesive to attach the banner.  To finish off the card, attached the front piece to the base cardstock and glued tiny rhinestones to the background.

Here is the finished card.

Card #8 – New Baby Girl Card – {31 Days of Cards}

Cards for 2015 InstagramBefore we get to Card #8, the winner of yesterdays daily giveaway is: Alan who said, “Nice card…how long did it take?”.

Thank you and Congratulations Alan!  The card only took about 20 minutes to make.

I hope you enjoy your card.

Card #8 –  New Baby Girl card

I need to start off today’s post with a confession.  I did, in fact, make today’s card – I just didn’t make it today.  I made it about 8 months ago for a card making challenge.  Yesterday, I was going through my stash of cards and came across this card and thought it would make a good addition to this series and truth be told, I simply ran out of time.  So here’s today’s card along with the tutorial video I made.

I used pink cardstock (5 1/2″ X 8 1/2″) for my base, pale pink cardstock (5 1/4″ X 4″) for the front and a selection of pink patterned cardstock (1″ X 5″) for the design.

Here is the finished card.

And the video (it’s only 8 minutes):

This is also a great card for using up scraps.  The scalloped pieces are made using a scallop die cut and run through the Big Shot Machine. Additionally, you could really use this design with any sentiment.

Until tomorrow,

Card #7 – “Just a Note” Card – {31 Days of Cards}

Card #7 –  “Just A Note” card

I started by assembling all my supplies.

Card 7 Supply LayoutSpoiler alert:  I’m a little enamored with my butterfly die cut.  It might show up a few times in the next 22 days ;-).

I’m also accumulating a nice big stack of scrap cardstock and am trying to work the pieces of paper into my cards.  Today’s card is an attempt to use my scraps.  I really don’t like to throw away scraps because so much can be done with them.  I’m thinking about doing a series later in the year where I make cards using only my scraps (except for the base).  Like I said, I’m thinking about it.

I used white cardstock (5 1/2″ X 8 1/2″) for my base and a selection of patterned cardstock (3/4″ X 4 1/4″) for the design.

Butterfly painted with WS Glitter PenI started by die cutting the butterflies from yellow patterned cardstock.  I used my Wink of Stella glitter pen to glitterize (not sure if that’s a word) the butterflies.  I set those aside to dry while I worked on the design of the card.

Inking the edges of patterned cardstockI cut the patterned paper strips for the card design.  I chose 5 different patterns that were from a similar color family.  I cut them into 3/4″ X 4 1/4″ strips and then inked the edges with my Distress Ink (tumbled glass) of each individual piece.  I then started at the top of the white cardstock base, on an angle, gluing down each piece.  After they were attached I took my scissors and cut off the bits that were hanging over the edge of the card.

stamping with fiskars stamp pressI used my Fiskars Easy Stamp Press to position the sentiment in line with the last piece of patterned cardstock.  I used Distress Ink (salty ocean) to stamp the sentiment.

Card 7 8Assembling this card was really simple.  I glued the 3 butterflies to the front of the card and added pearl bead dots to each butterfly.

Here is the finished card.

Card #6 – Ruff Day? Card – {31 Days of Cards}

Cards for 2015 InstagramBefore we get to Card #6, the winner of yesterdays daily giveaway is:  Michelle who said, “That card is awesome!! All of them are beautiful!”.

Card #6 – Ruff Day? card

I started by assembling all my supplies.

Card 6 Supply LayoutWe all have people in our life that are dealing with difficult situations.  I’m aware of several in my own life right now and felt like making a card that would acknowledge their situation as well as communicate my concern and care.  I was going through my stamps set and came across this dog/cat set that just felt right.  I usually shy away from these kinds of cards because I’m always afraid I’m going to say something that is not helpful (out of sheer nervousness).  This year, however, I want to stop that nonsense and send these cards to people who need to know I care.

I used grey/blue cardstock (5 1/2″ X 8 1/2″) for my base, a patterned cardstock (4″ X 5 1/2″) and seafoam cardstock for the sentiment (1″ X 4″).

Die cutting the circleI started by cutting a circle from the patterned cardstock.  I then inked the edges and let that sit for a bit.  I took a piece of scrap white cardstock and embossed the dog image using black embossing powder. After heat setting the image, I took my Distress Ink markers and colored in the dog.  I didn’t have to worry about staying in the lines because I was going to cut the image out.  And I did.

Card 6 3I set the dog aside and stamped the sentiment with Versamark ink and heat embossed using the same black embossing powder onto the seafoam cardstock.

Assembling this card was really simple.  I aligned the dog in the circle, glued the dog behind the circle and glued the patternedfoam adhesive banner dimension cardstock to the grey/blue base.

I attached the whole sentiment banner just below the dog using foam adhesive squares to give the banner dimension.  I finished the card off with three tiny rhinestones.

Here is the finished card.

As you’re well aware, I’m an advocate for all things dog and I’m also a firm believer in the calming, soothing qualities of dogs (and cats, for my friends with felines ;-)).  It’s nice to be able to combine two of my passions into one card.

Card #5 – Birthday Card for a Guy

I started by assembling all my supplies.

Card 5 Supply LayoutI have to say that I find it challenging to make cards for guys.  What I usually do is think about the person and their interests and try to design a card around that.  For nephew’s birthday one year, I made a card using characters from a video game he was interested in and for my dad-in-law’s 70th, I made a ‘card in a box’ which featured pictures of all his children and grandchildren.  When there’s a theme it’s easy come up with a card they’re going to like.

I used navy cardstock (5 1/2″ X 8 1/2″) for my base, kraft cardstock (4″ X 5 1/2″) for the frame, beige card stock (3.75″ X 5″) and patterned paper for the coffee cups.

Using spray ink over the stencilAfter spraying with inkI started by stenciling stars onto the beige cardstock (3.75″ X 5″) using Dylusions ink (London Blue).  I placed the cardstock in my spray box (old cardboard box) and taped the stencil in place.  I covered the exposed area of the cardstock with scrap paper and then sprayed on the ink.  I then used the brown spray ink to add droplets onto the cardstock.  Dylusions takes a bit to dry so while I waited for that I worked on the sentiment tag.

Burlap used for the twineI cut a piece of white cardstock 1″ X 3″ and stamped “Happy Birthday” with Distress Ink (Faded Jeans).  I then inked over the entire piece with Distress Ink to match the color theme of the card and inked the edges with a darker shade of Distress Ink.  Before inking the edges, I used my scissors to create the banner shape.  When that was complete, I adhered the banner to a piece of navy cardstock (1 1/2″ X 4″).  As a final touch I pulled a piece of thread from a scrap piece of brown burlap and tied it around the whole piece.

Using the foam adhesive to give the banners dimensionTo add a little bit of dimension, I cut three pieces of patterned paper (1/2″ X 1 1/2″) and used my scissors to cut the banner shape.  I also inked the edges of each banner.  I used adhesive to attach these to the back of the main sentiment banner.  Then I used foam adhesive to prop each banner up a bit.

I attached the whole sentiment banner to the starry background, attached that to the piece of kraft cardstock and finally to the navy cardstock base.  I also glued down a piece of beige cardstock inside for the personal message.

Here is the finished card.

As I was making this card, I thought of other ways to make the same design and incorporate other masculine elements.  I think I need to make a few of these 😉

Paws || Walk On – 12.28 – 1.10

Every now and then when I’m walking dogs, I will just stop, ask them to sit for about 30 seconds and then I will say “walk on”. That is there cue to start walking again. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1. They’re super focused when they’re on the walk and I like to know I can get their attention any time I need it. 2. It’s good to continue to incorporate training into their daily routines. Just as we need to continue to refine our skills, so must dogs.

This always reminds me how important it is for me to pause and reflect on the past week and then think about the next one as I “walk on”.

Card #4 – How’ve you bean?

I started by assembling all my supplies.

Card 4 Supply Layout

StampsI was given this stamp set by a dear friend for my birthday.  I happen to love tea, coffee, stamps and puns so this was an AWESOME gift!

I used stone cardstock (5 1/2″ X 8 1/2″) for my base, rust cardstock (4″ X 5 1/2″), white card stock (1″ X 4″) and patterned paper for the coffee cups.

Inking with Distress InkI started by using the border punch on the white cardstock (1″ X 4″).  I then inked the piece with Distress Ink and a piece of foam to remove the bright white and inked the edges with a darker shade of Distress Ink.  I used my adhesive to attach the border piece to the rust cardstock about a third of the way down from the top of the card.  I inked the edges of the rust cardstock and I set that aside while I worked on the coffee cups.

Stamping on back of pattern paperInking the cup detailsFor each coffee cup, I stamped the cup image onto the back of each piece of patterned paper.  I then cut out the cup making sure to also cut the piece from inside the handle.  Then I used my Pitt pen to draw the border lines and details of the cup.  I did this 5 times.  Additionally using my hearts punch, I punched 3 large hearts out of scrap rust cardstock for the front of the cups.

Card 4 closeup 2I wanted to stack the cups on top of each other, so I used my Exacto knife to make a small slit in the top of 4 of the cups and then slipped the cups together.  I then used my tape adhesive to glue the cups to the rust cardstock on top of the border piece.

I stamped the sentiment with Momento black ink just underneath the border piece.

Rounding the cornersTo finish off the card, I used my Wink of Stella Glitter Pen on the hearts and rounded the corners with my We Are Memory Keepers Corner Chomper.

Here is the finished card.
